@Crucial I know exactly where Fairlie is and because I know I won't be going there anytime soon I looked up stockists. There are two in Te Ika a Maui. One in Wellington and the other just past Mystery Creek on the way to Te Awamutu.
That's alright, just had me really confused with your OP
Didn't realise there was a stockist in Welly though!
Wait are you saying the pies that are in Fairlie can also be got in Welly?
According to their website there is a cafe on Thornton quay that sells them. Don’t know if it’s still true.
The olds will be happy to hear that if true. Pretty sure Fairlie cafe is the only reason their bikie gang goes to the SI.

How good! Why can't I get one?
You wouldn’t want one mate. She must be over 90 now.

On second thoughts, it is YOU we’re talking about here
As you were.
I bet she still has that accent.

If you can discern it through all that dribbling.

@Crucial stopped. got pie. ate pie. Superb.
Better Half reckons one of the best she's had.

OK, well 3700km around the south island and here's the top 5ish culinary highlights in no particular order
- Hunted venison on the bbq at a mates place.
- Burrito from Craft Burrito in Wanaka. Top tier. Great location (see pic below)
- Pie from Fairlie Pies. All exceptional.
- Surprisingly, Mint & Co in Twizel. Just very good quality food, good service and well priced.
- Likewise, Betsey Janes in Fox dished up some tasty, well made food. Small but good menu.
- ... and Slam Club in Kaikoura - seems run by european (Austrian/French), great risotto, smoked meats ... in Kaikoura?
Brewery of the trip was Emporium Kaikoura. Seriously good beers. Their hazies were very good (and served at Slam Club); and have one fo these to try (https://www.emporiumbrewing.co.nz/shop/p/imperialapfelstrudel).

... and custard squares. Wanaka bakery in Alberton, and Twizel. FFS. Ridiculous.
Do custard squares even exist outside of NZ?

Apparently 'vanilla slice' in Aus ... but no idea how they stack up. Good ones are sublime.
