Meanwhile, Mercedes are about to present further evidence regarding the incident at turn 4. Apparently this is comprised of in car footage which bizarrely not available at the time.

Oddly though I felt that the on board footage from Verstappen’s car bore out his view that he just couldn’t make the apex. It didn’t seem to show him steering wide or making any changes to force Hamilton wider. So I guess the question is whether or not Verstappen was wilfully reckless in going into the corner too hot.

My money is on “just a racing incident. Move on”.

I have no idea how he got away with that at the time. He ran wide as he was going too fast, which prevented a pass from happening. If anything, I thought it was the best point in the race to show Hamilton's ability in that he avoided the collision.

In my view it was sanctionable at the time, but not looking back.

Your thoughts chime with mine, in particular that it was dealt with at the time and I'm kind of against retrospective penalties in sport, but Mercedes think they have new evidence, which really should have been available at the time, so they have a point. It's just that from what I've seen, it doesn't materially affect things.

If I'm honest, and I say this as quite a large Verstappen fan boy, I did wonder if he was trying to take Hamilton out ... No points for either driver is better for him than Hamilton win, Verstappen second ...

My bro swore to me that Bottas was going to take one for the team and remove Max at the start (massive Hamilton/Mercedes fan).

Lucky he didn't put money on it.

To me, it was more he can push it that much harder and take the risk. So he did, whether he was beyond what is reasonable, I dunno.

Crazy penultimate race, 2 red flags, 2 virtual safety cars, Verstappen trying to emulate the Schumacher Rival Elimination Tactics (TM). Hamilton wins, also fastest lap, so they go equal points into last race. Going to be some vitriol spewed over this mess!

    @machpants

Haven’t seen it but will watch the highlights with interest. Jolyon Palmer on the BBC coverage was pretty unequivocable about Verstapoen’s behaviour.

On a separate theme, have you been listening to Hamilton’s hypocritical mouthing about Saudi human rights and Mercedes being sponsored by a firm tied up in the Grenfell Tower cladding scandal. It seems that despite him telling the rest of the world about their moral responsibilities, these issues are nothing to do with him.

    Great driver, but complete prick.

@catogrande Yeah I saw that, he’s right about the Saudi, and I suspect the sponsors wil be gone as he addressed that at the press event before. Obvs the driver has nothing to do with sponsorship, so not really his fault. I don;t like him at all, his environmental stuff whilst racing F1 and buzzing around in private jets etc. But he’s a great driver, and Verstappen is a cocky dangerous shit head who is like a whiy teen never admitting he’s wrong. So def behind Hamilton more than V

That’s more or less my take on the two of them and of course Horner is such an enabler for Verstappen. Plus of course Hamilton is a Brit so I feel obliged to wave the flag a bit. But by the cringe, he doesn’t make it easy.

I wonder what's the money on Max to win, but get points deducted cos he drives like a tool. Followed by months of legal wrangling

Great lap from Max under pressure

Hamilton still the favourite because he has the faster car. Lewis is surrounded by cars on the soft tyre though.. that should might make the first few corners interesting

@catogrande I've been warming to Hamilton the last couple of races. Liked his quip yesterday after qualifying that at least he'll be able to see where Max is (while laughing).

Also went up in my books when talking about human rights last week and said of his helmet "it's just a helmet".
