DC woulda made this tackle
Sums up what I was getting at earlier nicely. Taking on a guy twice your size high isn't very wise (and yes, Dan would have nailed him around the ankles, no doubt about it - well maybe a little doubt, but not very much doubt overall).

I remember thinking in 2011 WC if DC had been fully fit we would have walked it. He was that good.
Thinking along that line it makes the 2011 win even more impressive because we did it with 3rd and 4th choice 10s
Except the third choice turned out to be far, far better than the second choice -- we just did not know that at the time. When Cruden was 1st Five for the the ABs was our best ever period.
Cruden ran onto the 2011 final with no demons (as did Beaver) and could just play his game. Carter was carrying two horrible previous RWC losses in his head. Given that the rest of the team near choked for the same reason, I don't think Carter would have made much difference.
If having Carter would have walked it, why did having McCaw make it so difficult?
McCaw had a broken bone in his foot in the 2011 RWC.
As for Carter, the best 10 i've ever seen. He had it all.
That 2015 RWC quarter, semi and final performance from him something else. He finally laid to rest the issue of never having won a World Cup (by being on the field). The drop goal in the final gets more publicity but the drop goal in the rain in the semi was just as impressive - up to that point the ABs were looking a bit shaky and he grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck.
There's a moment in the 2015 final when Nehe puts a pretty flaccid clearing kick into touch just outside the 22. Bender might be in the bin at this time and the Aussie resurgence is coming.
Dan basically starts talking more than ever, revving the boys up and, on replays if you just focus on him, he takes the game as his to win and simply gets it done, including the drop goal from a static base which was immense. There was no way he was going to let this one get away.
Jesus, he was good😁
Misses touch (as he was knackered from covering fullback and wing, Aussies had done a job on him sending him one side to the other), Aussies regather, counter and Kuridrani scores to get it within 5. And you're absolutely right about DC: three massive moments to close out the match: the touch finder, the 55m penalty, the dg.
A memory of the penalty was Kafer saying "Dan Carter will get this. He's just THAT sort of player."

I'd think Beaver had a huge number of demons to face as he was held pretty much responsible for an awful loss to the Wobbles in Hong Kong (IIRC).
Stepped up to the mark and played the game of his life that day - one of the most clear-headed players on the paddock. No wonder McCaw holds him in such high regard
I was there live and rewatched it four years later and thought it was an unremarkable Beaver performance. He didn't bottle it (yay) but they were outscored 7-3 by an otherwise pedestrian French team.
Obviously not all his fault getting ball from Ellis and given the tense moment, but there are at least 10 other guys on that paddock that defended like Banshees in that second half who deserve the credit for that win more than Beaver for one wobbly penalty and not a whole lot else.

Carter’s defence was superb because he had textbook tackling technique. I’m a huge fan of Wilkinson and he was fearless in defence despite his size, but Wilko didn’t have the technique and accuracy of Carter.
Carter’s ability to kick off both feet with distance and accuracy under pressure.
Then there’s the running and passing games and the goal kicking. But the defence and kicking was what really sets him apart in my book.

Not saying Beaver won the game on his own, just pointing out he had more than a few demons to conquer and did pretty well overall in the context of that game.
If we'd had a fit DC for that game, we'd have won a lot easier and they'd be no teeth marks on the back of my sofa.

Best 10 ever and one of the very best All Blacks ever. Possibly our best ever back.
Best back I've seen anywhere by some margin.
As for Beaver's part in the RWC final, he was adequate under pressure but nearly blew that kick.
He only needed to be adequate under pressure and not miss the kick. He was and he didn't.

I don't think even Beavers folks would think he was remotely in DCs class as a player, but it's a great story of redemption and he became part of history.
They made a fucken movie about it, admittedly it was terrible and cringy in a way kiwi movies often are but the point still stands.
I bet he hasn't had to buy too many Waikato Draughts in the last ten years.

Remember sitting in stands at Newlands watching him playing 12 for Crusaders and thinking how well he was reading the space on the field. Just wow. By the time he got the 10 jersey he was just a complete joy to watch without fail. Unquestionably the greatest 10 of the modern game. Thanks for the memories DC —

If DC was fit for the final we'd have destroyed France. As it was we should've been clear at halftime but for Piri missing some easy kicks to keep the he scoreboard pressure mounting.

My wife was expecting any day around the 2nd Lions test so going to the pub early in the morning (in Norway) was something of a risk. But thankfully my son stayed put for a few days and I could witness history. What a performance. After that there was pressure from the family to call him Daniel.
Most legendary 10s seem to be brilliant at certain aspects of the game but not everything. Some are amazing kickers and great at controlling the game, but not the best at running (Fox, Botha, Wilkinson). Others are ridiculous with ball in hand but not great at kicking (Carlos, Barrett). But Carter was different. He was brilliant at everything. Easily the best 10 of all time and I’m not sure we’ll ever see another quite like him.
Such a shame he was injured in 2011. He was absolutely on fire. But 2015 was epic. That was him giving a massive fark you to the haters.
He also appears to be an absolute champion bloke and role model. We were so lucky to have him.

Piri twinged a groin or something in the warm up, it was even on the TV during the build up - doing some kicking practise and he just hitched and limped for a bit. But he saved our arse leading upto that game, remember the Keep Calm Piri's On posters. He really stepped up, such a shamw for all our stress levels that he was injured and kicked like shit.

My second was due around the test, and I had to give my ticket away. Still haven't forgiven the little fucker

Neither, watched in a pub, sweated 3kgs out, didn't enjoy a minute of it, never seen it again.
I recall Piri trying to kick a loose ball to someone that ended badly rather than gathering it - did that even happen or is it just a random (not) memory???
