What’s out there at Second Five?
-
Who is our next Nonu? What we have now in JG or ALB are caretakers. I think we need some more size to take the pressure off RM or BB. I am sold on Laumape. Good super rugby player but that’s it.
-
@broughie Laumape hasn't had a chance to really show what he can do I don't think. Playing outside TJP spraying it around didn't help his cause. Then again, some good coaching would help him too.
We're playing the Crusaders 12 at the moment. TJ Faiane from Auckland is good, but probably too small for international games. ALB is there but playing 13. Not sure if anyone from the Highlanders is a candidate.
Jordie? Size, speed, physicality (I'm only half kidding - he has all the physical attributes, but I don't think we'll see him there)
-
I think Laumape needs a go in the top team to really show what he's worth. A game with a bunch of second stringers won't tell the coaches anything
-
@nzzp Laumape. There is that argument that he is not getting a chance. He doesn’t play bad for Wellington with TJP inside him. I agree about Fiane. Too small and not talented enough. Where is someone built like Caleb Clark? Jordie could be an option although going do that route sounds like we are buying into the Foster approach to selection. Play everyone out of position. He is big and not afraid to tackle but perhaps he should be playing fullback instead of his brother.
-
I would like to see Jordie tried at 12. But Goodhue and ALB are best combo we have. Wonder if Trask will make the big leap next year and ignite the midfield?
-
not sold on Laumape, doesnt seem to have the defensive nous required.
Laumape is listed as 97kg
ALB 96kg
JG 100kg
Faiane 92kg
Jordie 95kgNext years super season will be intriguing as to who plays where, as I think Fozzie has identifed 12 as a problem area and is shoehorning JG there, and while he has done a decent the job, we are just lacking spark, although TBF, most areas of our play is lacking spark at present.
-
If we want Sotutu to start at no.8, put Ardie at 2nd 5. Problem solved.
One to keep an eye out for in the next little while as I think he will end up in the midfield, Leicester Fainga'anuku.
-
@taniwharugby and Nonu and probably SBW had close to 10 kgs on these guy which is a difference.
-
@broughie Nonu was almost a one of a kind. As big as a flanker (bigger than Masoe when I bumped into them on Courtney Place), fast enough to play wing, developed a great passing game and a grubber kicking game too
-
I'd like to see PUJ and Tanielu Tele'a get some time at 12 in Super Rugby.

I thought PUJ did the basics well in his short debut, supported well. The position is wide open right now
-
We lack a cutting edge in MF right now. I like ALB, not sold on JG as the answer, he's a better 13 being shoehorned into 12

@ACT-Crusader he's only listed as 99kg too...
Rieko is listed at 103kg.
Who are the other mid-fielders about in NZ?
Tamati Tua - 1.96m 100kg
Quin Tupaea - 1.86m 97kg
PUJ - 1.87m 102kg
Vince Aso - 1.81m 90kg
Tanielu Tele'a - 1.88m 105kg -

So you'd like someone 10kg heavier (and taller) than Laumape, and is like Caleb Clarke, to start in the midfield? I know someone who fits that description!!

Ardie plays bigger than his weight (don’t trust the internet) suggests.
If we want size, then Fainga'anuku might be the guy, 6’2 and 110kg

Looks bigger than that.

Fainga’nuku will end up at centre the crusaders may use him to cover centre at times while Ennor is injured so I hear around the traps. That way they can take some work load away from Havalli and Goodhue having to front up every week in the MF

I wonder if he is the man. OK, we wouldn't be making the most of his speed on the outside channels but Rieko could certainly bend the defensive line. And if he developed a SBW-like offload.

Did you see him at 12 when Tana played him there? Such a waste.
Developing as a 13, but not a candidate at 12 for me.
-
What’s George Moala up to ?
-
@ACT-Crusader I was thinking about him as a 12 today funnily enough. Sounds silly right now but with the options the Crusaders have out wide, he may eventually get pushed in.
I guess we could give Rieko a go at 12 after the success he had there with the Blues a couple of seasons ago.

Haha didn't see this while posting. Rieko was a car crash is slow motion at 12 for the Blues. One of the worst selections I've ever seen from a Blues coach and he kept him there all season.
-
Ardie 12, Rieko 13 could be a goer.
-
Jordie for christ sake.
-
Faiane shouldn't be as far away as he currently is, given that he is a specialist 2nd V. If they don't want to trust Laumape there, then Faiane would be a player to put in the environment and see whether he can go to the next level.

@MN5 Still playing for Clermont.
Bugger, he had some brute force that coulda been handy
-
Peter Umaga Jensen should be the 2nd five.
102 kg.

Based on a few handy games at 13 this year?
-
@Crazy-Horse
He's got it mate - trust me (says anonymous guy on the Fern) -
PUJ looked a lot more comfortable at 13 than 12 this year.
-
Goodhue’s first season at 2nd 5, I think he will grow into the role longer term because the defensive game is solid. Us fans might have to be a little patient as he develops the attacking game from closer in.

@Frank Has @Canes4life hacked your account?

good highlights reel-apart from the music!

Often rated best 12 in NH club rugby.

Going well for Clermont.
Pretty impressive.

Chances of him returning to NZ rugby are slim to none surely.
I know this sounds crass but silver lining of the global situation is most Euro clubs will tighten their purse strings for a few years.
