Conrad Smith would not be as high on the pantheon if he played his career with ALB or Goodhue at 12.
interesting...I have similar thoughts about Walter Little wouldnt be so highly rated if not for Bunce.
hot take. Not sure i am with you on that one, but definitely take the point.

In a perfect world i would like two guys in the loosies that can bend the line, a distributor at 12, and someone with genuine pace at 13. I think that provides the best attacking balance.
So ... McCaw, Kaino, Nonu and ... er... not Smith?
yeah okay let's play your game
It's not 2015 any more
But, in 2015 you had Kaino and Read who could get you over the line, Nonu was a very real threat BUT also your distributor. Smith was there for the ride.

i actually lean the other way, i dont think Nonu ever played as well as when he had smith outside him. His first stint with the blues and his stint with the Highlanders as good examples

Nonu played shit at Super level full stop.

@mariner4life but doesn't that make his point? I don't necessarily agree with it, but helps his stance.
He was good for the canes on and off.

Well, that's because it was your point, he was just agreeing with it 🤣

Whatever the selections end up being, I just hope they give us some continuity this year, both in the 8/9/10 axis and the 12/13 position. Bouncing guys around constantly is so problematic when the smallest of margins can decide games - a little pop pass from someone you know so well, an inbuilt trust that your inside will make his tackle so you don't drift in etc. Takes time to build that stuff.

He was on for the Canes way more than off.
In the season he got the boot he was in great form and then he was great on his return.
Nonu had way more good Super seasons than bad ones. It’s a myth to suggest the opposite.
-
@taniwharugby said in What’s out there at Second Five?:
@nepia he def had way more good seasons at the canes (in fact, probably didnt have too many bad seasons so much as a few bad games) his form elsewhere was more cold than hot.
I guess he had one good blues season and one dud one, and then one dud one at the Highlanders?

Conrad was no doubt a really positive influence on Nonu, particularly in his early years when he was trying to find his feet, but I absolutely reject the argument that Nonu needed Smith outside him to excel when he was in his prime.
Nonu is the most complete 12 I've ever seen. He was an amazing distributer, vision for his outsides, had a good boot when needed, and was an absolute weapon with ball in hand. He was unreal, Conrad Smith playing outside him had nothing to do with that.
Honestly any 13 outside him would have looked good, and I know Carter is on record saying how much he liked playing inside Nonu.
Forget about his seasons with the Blues and the Landers, he's a Wellington man through and through so was mentally not there for those teams after the absolute farce with Hammett deciding to axe one of the greatest rugby players NZ has ever produced.

Poor old Ma’a just isn’t as revered as he should be. Naysayers will always point out indifferent form for Super Franchises that aren’t the Canes or maybe some dumb fuck off the field behaviour as a youngster. It’s pretty harsh really.

Him and smith were the best combo of all time.

There are sites other than the fern. I’ve read all sorts of shit abusing him extremely harshly and unnecessarily. I remember one thread on Facebook saying Aaron Mauger was much better because he played for one franchise and was not a “mercenary” as one recent example.

Really? He never got the credit he deserved.
Although being average for the canes doesn't help...

@mn5 You been visiting Canterburyisthegreatest.com/forum ?
No but I might combine that with my next trip to the dentist.
-
Havili the frontrunner for me. Combined playmaker with physicality and really sound on defense. There are no downsides as far as I can see. Can he adapt to test footy with less time and space is the only question.
-
@old-samurai-jack less time and space maybe but smith inside gives a micro second more
