The smartest rugby minds in the world come from NZ
and they all have coaching jobs. Even some of the not so smart ones.
So you are left with the startling insight of Stephen Bates. I mean, look at the guys left to do media. Failed coaches. Players not smart enough to get coaching gigs.
They could at least balance them out with one or two professional sports journos if I would suggest anything....
and who are these professional sports journalists?
And keep in mind, a journalist is only as good as his access. And the NZRU have all the power there. And in a time when they control more and more of the content through their own platforms, it's only going to get worse.
Journalists don't add to panel shows either. Fox League have heaps of them on, and they are all deadshits. They are good for digging up dirt, and making confident faces while they air their guesses, but they don't know any more about how the sport is actually played than you or I. The same goes for the ones on the AFL shows.

I don't watch any of those shows anymore so I don't really care. I guess it isn't rocket science or tiddlywinks so who do we expect to front these shows?

i don't watch them either. As i don't care. Sport for me is entertainment, the detail just doesn't bother me. A test takes 2 hours, and that is the amount of viewing time i have to give it. I'll spend another hour typing here (and probably 4 reading!) but I'm not watching a panel show autopsy or preview because in all honesty, i'm going to get just as good from here, once i filter the bullshit (mainly my own)

I've been a loyal Sky Sport customer since moving to NZ from Europe about 20 years ago, a huge rugby fan but I cant take their content anymore.
Zero intellect, zero analysis, zero knowledge of the opposition, humour that caters to Under 14 boys. They shoot and edit the game very well...but outside the game... Build up, Post match, Weekly shows are woeful.
The smartest rugby minds in the world come from NZ, as do the innovative tactics, coaches and athletes... but Sky have not kept up with the times and are locked in the 90's tactics, the pre-professional game.
Are there any apps legal/illegal to tune into some BTSport, Sky Sports UK, RTE, Eirsport, BBC Sport???
Please help... ANYTHING that respects their audience as intelligent sports fans?
I sort of agree, but then I wonder what you are actually watching it for?
The UK coverage is dead set boring. People never really say anything controversial & although there is occasional disagreement, for the most part its just regulation rent-a-quote. Of course there are exceptions to every rule. Greenwood is entertaining, O'Driscoll likes to get a bit cheeky but that's pretty much so where it ends.
Woodward, Lynagh, Fitzpatrick, Pienaar etc etc ... snooze fest.
Showing my misery age here, but I turn it on at kick off (after anthems, haha etc) and then kill it at the final whistle. The coverage literally adds nothing. The commentary isn't bad if you ask me (although many will disagree), but the pundits are incredibly dull.
-
@mariner4life yeah there is alot of good stuff here, it is also a wide range of views too, sometimes I see a comment here and might watch a replay and think, fuck >normally dumb fluffybunny< was right!
I watched a few eps of 1014, but I did so mainly for the analysis side of things to pick up ideas for coaching, but again, you can get plenty of the cream off the top of the stuff in here!

Snap. Turn on at kick off, mute at half time, sound on at kick off again, mute after final whistle, switch off about three minutes later.
Only UK analysts who seem to add anything are Greenwood, Moore, Johnson and Woodward (sometimes). The rest offer cliches or rest-a-quote or in the case of Jonathan Davies just talk shite. Most of the commentators don't know the laws.
In terms of Sky NZ, the coverage and discussion of the game is fine, but the attempts at "humour" are an embarrassment.

Still funnier than 7 Days though

@sparky Davies does talk shite, the difference is though if you ask him I'm sure he'd agree!
Maybe its a personal thing, but I could happily mute Woodward every single time he speaks. I watched a game with him in a corporate box once and he was terrible. Turned up an hour late, watched the game and spend the entire time on his phone. Would take selfies with people, but had no interest in engagement / conversation with anybody.

@Rapido Yes I agree, I really like Justin Marshalls insight, it's perfect for in game commentary during the live event.
Even I will admit that Meg's on the spot comments around some things is quite insightful. He has the vision to spot plays and tactics.
Someone just needs to gag him when there is a contentious rulingForget the contentious ones, it’s usually the fairly obvious ones he seems off script.
One thing in favour for Meg is that at least he’s willing to make a call on it. Not all ‘expert’ commentators do. Tim Horan for example is the greatest fence sitter going round.

The Fern fills a void in what @Rugby72 was getting at.
Maybe one for the grumpy old man thread, but build up pre-game shows are terrible and I’m talking across sports.
The only one I watch is Inside the NBA but that’s because Charles and Shaq are mainly talking smack and having a massive laugh. I’m not watching for their stats or analysis or gossip. Just a bit of fun and entertainment.
Rugby it’s dire. League blurg. The hosts are usually over excited and there to pat the backs and stroke the egos of the former players/coaches that are part of the commentary team.
At least on here you get a laugh, argument, insight, gossip, speculation; all stuff you can filter too.
-
@ACT-Crusader you're welcome.
-
@Crucial yea I used to always read his articles in the herald when he did them years back.
He'd be better suited to sideline or studio analysis rather than commentary where he is prone to those emotional outbursts or ridiculous off the cuff comments that are often wrong.

Wish they did more tactical analysis or player head to heads. I actually don't mind Goldie, JK, Marshall but some of the B-team (Bates, Wheeler etc.) are a bore. I would rather have mush mouth Jones.
Goldie, JK, Marshall
Time for grumpy old man thread. Goldie is inoffensive, but knows who butters his bread (NZRugby - everything is awesome).
JK's insight and analysis capability is remarkably low for someone who coached at the top level. Remarkable human being, but as an insightful commentator is terrible. 'The boys will be up for it this week'. FFS, thanks Einstein.
Marshall has that halfback quality of being totally confident, and often totally wrong. I get you need that to succeed at the top level, but learn the goddamn laws and don't spout off when you're totally wrong. Again.
-
Goldie and Marshall are underutilized. Ex players who are unflustered in front of the camera. For this reason I think Goldie is wasted as host.
4 people on a show is too many. Should be host plus 2 experts.
Never, never, ever make people stand, with a tablet, and talk. Warning bells right there that show will be fluff over quality.
Standing in front of big screen only to be a medium when need to point, like the hat guy on 1014 .

This rant is outstanding

IMO Marshall is at his best when there is a set piece and he calmly dissects what the attacking options are, where he expects the play to go for the next phase or 2.
I also don't mind when he gets a bit excited, even though his comments are less valuable, its still clear he just loves the game and the ABs.
-
I think a lot of rugby commentary has gone to shit because with all the angles and replays and such there is nothing to talk about.
The only cure is to A) see if there is a radio broadcast running in parallel (like people do here in Oz with ABC Radio during the cricket) or
just stick it out and then go and find interesting analyses like Squide Rugby afterward.

Only thing being he gets the play wrong so many times...
