Papalii, Hodgman and Akira the Aussies need to be roughed up. We need to send numbers into the breakdown too often we were spectators. Cane was awesome support crew were soft.
It’s not the lack of aggression or mongrel that was the problem, it was the accuracy and timing at breakdown that didn’t create the opportunities.
Our defensive ruck work was okay and we caused a number of TOs or won penalties.
yep, with our hands mainly which is sort of away from what we have been doing in years gone by. Aussie were also over-committing early, so after a few phases they started to run out of number. They addressed it as the game went on.

I didn't think that was the case at all. I didn't notice them getting an easy roll on, particularly because Cane was stopping them as much as possible.
The way the ruck is reffed now you are wasting time sending in players unless there is going to be an outcome. So much of the modern game is making a decision when to put the shoulder into the breakdown or not.
It was also profitable to let the hot headed Oz forwards fly in off their feet as we were getting easy turnovers via the ref. -

Yes, I was going to say, Hodgman would be a good chance to replace a lethargic Tu'inukuafe. Ofa and Tuipulotu need to front up too.

Biggest question for me is can we produce an aggressive defence effort to counter the Australians? We made double their tackles but produced less turnovers, indicating that we were well off the mark in defensive structure, and not up to it physically.
I have a lot of doubts about Scott MacLeod and the loose forwards.

to my eyes that would require a complete change in thinking and strategy. our system looks a continuation of the "hold them until they give us the ball back, and then we score" plan of the last few years. Don't rush because that carries risk, passive line speed, accurate tackling.

I thought we made a huge number of turnovers, albeit they were ruck penalty turnovers (not releasing).

@Tim There was a lot of noise early about bringing physicality and aggression back to the forwards after being outmuscled by England pretty comprehensively.
But then you picked two sevens and leave guys like Akira out of the entire squad. What's the dealio?
Still - only one game. Could easily turn in a monster performance next week and put 50 on Aus to restore the stars alignment.

If Foster goes down the past Hansen/Foster speak. then one change I think BB for DMac at FB.
It will read something like"It was our first hit out for the season, we are not going to make rash decisions by making whole sale changes,We have to trust the players and our systems and back the players to get it right".
Otherwise Foster has to admit he completely stuffed up his selections,Game plan and motivational skill.He will bite the bullett and hope the players get him out of the shit.

Tuipulotu and Tu'ungafasi were pushing forward quickly and making aggressive two man tackles in Super Rugby, but they didn't seem to be involved in that tactic on Sunday.
It was noticeable that we were waiting for them, which is just suicidal against a team that uses the ball so well in traffic. Stormey is in my top five players ever, but he is fucking useless as a defensive coach - we've not improved in three years. We should have raided a league club years ago or got a specialist from the NH.

I thought we made a huge number of turnovers, albeit they were ruck penalty turnovers (not releasing).
Yeah I don’t think they are counted in TO stats.

I noticed a few times that Ioane rushed out of the line. I wonder if that was a pre planned tactic to take away space. I’m in two minds about it’s effectiveness and the risk it presents.

It's risky. The Boks did that well last year. Mostly it was Faf
I though Ofa was sometimes a shooter too. Every tackle he missed was erring on the outside so it was forcing runners back towards the pack

Yeah notice Ofa do it also closer in. Franks also played that shooter as well.
Ioane was doing it quite wide though which sort of surprised me.

The amount of time and space White had was just ridiculous! It was the same as last year! He is running the cutter and setting up ball runners with an invisibility cloak on. Isn't it obvious if you pressure him and take away that space, the Wobs would find the going tougher?
