Bledisloe Two: Auckland, October 18
-
The thing that is frustrating is that already we are seeing the problems of 2018/19 popping up.
An unbalanced loose forward trio, messing about with a midfield combo so combinations can't form, lack of go forward up the middle to create space for the speedies etc. I know it is early days but jeez, and I hope I am wrong, but these things could magnify further.
Fox seems to get a free pass but he has always been in the mix since these issues appeared. -

McKenzie / J BarrettThe bracketing goes like this - if BB is fit then you don't need 10 cover on the bench, but if he's not, then you do.
Frizzel gets a chance to atone for yesterday but if he can't then I reckon he's a lost cause.
This selection is no different to last Sunday except that ALB starts. This looks more of rhe same to me.
Eh? Clarke and Sotutu are both in there to start.
-
I won't comment on the front row, but 4-7 stay, Sotutu comes in for Ardie who goes to the bench. Clarke starts at 11, ALB at 12. I think Reiko did enough to get another go at 13, that extra pace is awesome. JB can stay on at 14 if BB is fit, otherwise he goes to 15 and Jordan at 14.
Inexperienced? Maybe. Electric? Absolutely.

@Old-Samurai-Jack I agree about Carl. He did a good job of tackling by laying on top of people but nothing like Ofa. Lomax went okay.
Karl did a good job about tackling? Did you even watch the game? When Moody went off Karl brought nothing to the table except. A slow jog to the breakdowns. Very little to no urgency about his game, saw this in Mitre 10 and SRA.

Need to get some mongrel at the breakdowns, we need to intimidate at the collision. Aussies did an England Semi on us.

Anticipate minimal changes and no panic from Foster.
No visible panic from Foster, anyway! I'd imagine he thought a few choice thoughts about Rieko's coach-killing when he got back to his hotel.
Won't surprise me if the only two changes - injury permitting - are bringing in Beauden and Nepo - to play the 23 he originally wanted, though there will probably be a little bit more of juggling with the backs.
I'll be amazed if there's anything like the wholesale changes some are calling for.
Worrying thing is that that draw is basically a "break of serve" in the Bled. We can't afford to lose in Auckland and will already have to win one in Oz (or draw, which is more unlikely).
-
It is an attitude thing, isn't it? We have a big front 5, they just need to be pointed in the right direction.
-
My strategy would be to be bending the line at every opportunity. Oz looked weakest when going backwards. It was when we went sideways looking for chances that they were able to shut us down.
Every player's aim should be to go beyond where they first meet the defence or give the ball to someone who will, even if by a metre. -

Papalii, Hodgman and Akira the Aussies need to be roughed up. We need to send numbers into the breakdown too often we were spectators. Cane was awesome support crew were soft.

It’s not the lack of aggression or mongrel that was the problem, it was the accuracy and timing at breakdown that didn’t create the opportunities.
Our defensive ruck work was okay and we caused a number of TOs or won penalties.

yep, with our hands mainly which is sort of away from what we have been doing in years gone by. Aussie were also over-committing early, so after a few phases they started to run out of number. They addressed it as the game went on.

I didn't think that was the case at all. I didn't notice them getting an easy roll on, particularly because Cane was stopping them as much as possible.
The way the ruck is reffed now you are wasting time sending in players unless there is going to be an outcome. So much of the modern game is making a decision when to put the shoulder into the breakdown or not.
It was also profitable to let the hot headed Oz forwards fly in off their feet as we were getting easy turnovers via the ref. -

@Frank Take away PUJ and that would be my team too. A fire should be lit under Pat T and Karl T replaced by Lomax.
Loosehead v Tightness
Hodgeman is the other LH in the squad.

Yes, I was going to say, Hodgman would be a good chance to replace a lethargic Tu'inukuafe. Ofa and Tuipulotu need to front up too.
-
Biggest question for me is can we produce an aggressive defence effort to counter the Australians? We made double their tackles but produced less turnovers, indicating that we were well off the mark in defensive structure, and not up to it physically.
I have a lot of doubts about Scott MacLeod and the loose forwards.

to my eyes that would require a complete change in thinking and strategy. our system looks a continuation of the "hold them until they give us the ball back, and then we score" plan of the last few years. Don't rush because that carries risk, passive line speed, accurate tackling.

At least he has improved a little bit from these days.

I thought we made a huge number of turnovers, albeit they were ruck penalty turnovers (not releasing).
