@gt12 There was certainly a succession planning issue with Read, but there weren't any clear candidates either after Vito left. In saying that, Vito would have been 32 at last years' RWC. A younger 8 needed to be found. Hansen seemed to fart around trying a heap of guys at 6 but not 8.
If only there had been a young guy who had been killing it in Super rugby over multiple seasons, playing for someone like the Blues, who could have been selected and given some support to iron out any small issues in their game/preparation.
Even better if that guy already had a brother in the team. That might have been handy.
Yes, certainly advantageous to have a brother in the team. And the more, the merrier. Adam Whitelock also could or should have been a stud had he only been given an opportunity alongside Sam, Luke and George, and supported the shit out of.
If only Akira was a Whitelock or a Barrett.
Not another thread hi-jacked...
Hasn't Akira already admitted he wasn't in the correct mental space unless Hansen gets the blame for that as well?

I wouldn’t be surprised if the AB coaches giving him shit publicly via the media contributed to that mental space he got to. Could have been a completely different story if they had given him less stick and more carrot like they seemed to do with every other player. They also seemed pretty keen on squire even after he pulled himself out for “mental space” issues.

It’s a weird selection that only really worked against Oz. And, honestly, it was probably the key position that put us in the shit last year.
With Luatua being as good as he was and is, I find that selection blind spot a bit unforgivable.

Is Tana part of the problem too? Because he wasn’t selecting him to start as well.

Hasn't Akira been an 8 since he started with Auckland and the Blues? He's only played 6 this season, because he can't get a game ahead of Sotutu.

Huh? Akira has been an automatic starting pick for the Blues at 8 up until Sotutu's arrival this year ... it has been mentioned many times that the Blues coaches probably played him too much.
I'd probably have had mental health issues in 2018 if I was him in the form he was in and saw Luke Whitelock and Evans getting test starts and I wasn't.

that's All Black Captain Luke Whitelock
He was better than Sam Broomhall or Steven Bates at least.

Shall we revisit this thread now? I'm expecting some fucking apologies.

@antipodean I'm expecting a massive strop about Scott Robinson not being coach.
