It's a bit like club/franchise coach insists one of his players should be in the test team shocker

When you play on a Sunday out goes the tradition:

The All Blacks name their first test team of the year on Friday morning.

Surely there is no chance Savea starts at 8 over Sotutu? He can't whack on about bringing physicality back then do that, it'd be a mockery.

I've been following Ben Darwin on twitter, and one of the things he circles back to is combinations - and backs it up with data as well. The theory of "put the best players together" can work, but I'd rather see Rennie look at key combinations.

Keeping in mind I haven't watched much of SRAU at all:

Tate McDermott seems to be head and shoulders above the other options at 9, so he's a definite pick. It therefore stands to reason - using Darwin's theory 😉 - that you pick James O'Connor next to him, who has also had a good season behind what is a young but inconsistent pack.

Nic White therefore goes on the bench IMHO. One good game in Perth a year ago and then fuck all since.

Lolesio is a good player, but he's a kid, and will have his chances in future years. You can't really put him on the bench as he doesn't play any other positions.

I've got serious questions about the liability presented by Petaia. The kid could be anything - mostly broken - so what is going on with his S&C work? Start him, see if he breaks (again), and bring on someone else.

Toomua probably sits in 12 at that point as the logical backup 10, and brings experience and another boot to the backline to opt between a bash n barge inside centre as well as second five in the same shirt.

Koroibete picks himself. I'm not convinced that Daugunu is a positive in terms of being able to kick us out of trouble. That's why Banks is at the back, and maybe Wright on the blindside wing.

I've seen various forward packs listed elsewhere, and would probably go for something akin to Paul Cully's pack:

    1 Sio
    2 Fainga'a
3 Alalaatoa (Cully picked Tupou but nah)
    4 Philip
    5 LSL
    6 Samu
    7 Hooper (capt)
    8 Wilson
    9 McDermott
    10 JOC
    11 Koroibete
    12 Toomua
    13 Petaia
    14 Wright
    15 Banks

    16 Uelese
    17 Slipper
    18 Tupou
19 Hosea (big unit - give him a go)
    20 Wright
    21 White
    22 ?Paisami/Simone?
    23 Hodge

@NTA That looks pretty close to the mark. I think i'd have DHP at fullback ahead of Banks - DHP is no good on the wing but a good fullback and more well rounded than Banks to me.

Either Banks fails and I get to tell Brumbies fans (both of them) that he was never worthy despite all their jizzmatic explanations supporting his selection, or he succeeds and I get a Bledisloe win.

    There's no loser here.

Auckland council don't really let you have anything. In spite of the fact that you own the place and pay them shit loads for rates for which you receive no services. That should also read consents not concerts. They don't allow them either. In spite of a housing crisis apparently.

    Set me off briefly there.

As for the rugby - if that is the Aussie team it won't be like like England where we got smashed off the park. I like that our coach has recognised that though, and selection gets more interesting. Loosies in particular, we don't have much choice at lock.

I'm actually starting to feel a bit giddy over some test match rugby. Sadly It'll probably be a bit shit, as we normally are first test of the year.

@Canes4life Jordie needs to be seen properly at 12 at Super level before International level though.

Yeah. That last bit is just a fact of life.

We can hope for a change? Nah. It will be shit from us (disappointment disappoints me, so I prefer the expectment management and then I won't be disappointed).

You underestimate my ability to blame the Ponies for everything.

I'll admit, it is possible. But fullback is a pivotal defensive position so it is easy to blame them.

For example: Chris Fucking Latham in 2000 letting in 3 tries early. See?

To which the follow-up comment is "Fucking Reds players. Always letting us down".

Next week in Welly: "That John Eales is a fucking great Aussie player. Surprising that he came out of Queensland".
