The whole thing is about control. UEFA are worried they are about to lose control, and the 12 teams want to take greater control of their own financial destiny

I get the feeling the gulf owned sportswashing clubs are way less keen than the American owned clubs plus Barca, Real and Juve.

One group in it for profit , other group in for the good PR and ignore the costs.

They are also very much in it for prestige - much more than the "sports washing" in my view. Without Man United, Liverpool etc in the EPL and Real Madrid, Barcelona etc in the CL, how much prestige will a Man City get out of playing in those competitions

What a shambles. The whole fiasco remains me of the failed coup against Gorbachev in August 1991, although that made it through three and half days before collapsing.

So there were six English breakaway clubs. 13 EPL clubs have issued a statement condemning their move.

Who is / was sitting on the fence?

Amazing to me that with so much money behind it, it could still be executed so poorly.

This demonstrates the arrogance of the US owners, and the likes of Perez and Agnelli.

this is crazy, had they done no research into how their fans might react, are they honestly that arrogant?

all theyve ended up doing is taint their brand a little

Spanish clubs are broke, Italians are fading into irrelevance on a European level, and Americans can't comprehend relegation. This could end doing a lot of damage and good in football.

@kiwiwomble All except City have been in since the beginning. They were in the 3rd tier as recently as 1999

@dogmeat so not since they got they're current backer, these owners are either paranoid or they are tired of paying for a good squad and wanted to be able to ease off investment

It's more about not being in Champions league than relegation from the PL, La Liga etc. Pay-outs are also tiered based on position too.
