I'm sure plenty of people aim for that ideal and tell themselves that.
When it comes to a close call people have emotions and they have an influence. The person with the bias will often claim they have none.
not me, i hate the Chiefs, and would rather see most of them shot than play test rugby.
What impact would the Chiefs beating the Canes by a million points have on that position?

I just want to see the best players play in the rep teams with no bias
I agree that's an ideal that should be aimed for
In reality that's impossible.
But yes I'd hope there was no conscious bias from a selector and hopefully robust arguments would minimise unconscious bias. It's always going to be there though.

If we are looking at Fozzies history, expect barely deserving Waikato players to be selected
Pen Sevu Reece in to the 14 jersey right now.

It would be a shame, given the talent available, if a player as limited as Boshier was selected for the squad. No dominance when tackling or carrying.
if he was Australian they would call him one of the best openside flankers in the world
-
@mariner4life The new Pocock!

He wouldn't be in my squad. I'm expecting him to be named though

usually the selections due to bias at least come from the dominant team (Auckland players in the late 80s early 90s, Crusaders players in the late 90s, early 00s). It would take some balls to stick your favourites from the team with the big donut in the win column in to the squad.

Given up on the last game already?
Who are the Chiefs guys on the cusp? Boshier and Dmac? I can't imagine outrage from media or general public if those guys are included
There'll be pissing and whining about who misses out in the loosies and outside backs because there is so much talent. But that will happen no matter who is selected.

That's the sort of confidence you want to see!

I think every squad people post should be prefixed with either 'what I'd pick' versus 'what will be picked' often a big difference. We've got a coach who got in on a ‘continuity and experience’ ticket, I can see him picking a ‘continuity and experience’ team - recently the ABs coaches went for form rather than experience. Maybe that didn’t work so well at RWC in their minds. Expecially after many years of trusting experience did so well for them? So I think we will see very conservative selections, but I hope they are bold
There's absolutely no reason why in this of all years a "form over experience" approach shouldn't be tried for most positions. If you look at the guys currently playing well, they're all pretty young guys either at the beginning of the SR or AB careers and who are likely to be at their peaks in 2023. Now is the perfect opportunity to take a punt on some of these guys and set them on the path to be the incumbents for 2023.

i for one intend to come riding in here hard, besmirching some, white knighting others, and generally shit stirring all over the squad announcement thread
FWIW only Cane and ALB should get in from the Chiefs. And even then ALB on his previous body of work.
I guess Laulala as well, but seeing as how the Chiefs scrum was on skates, and he was opposite a nobody

We kinda of tried that last year to little success.

That's why I said "this of all years" - we're not playing in a world cup in 2020. Start building the experience now so that in 2023 the guys who are in form now are also the guys with experience at the time.

If the Bledisloe goes ahead it will basically be a full year since either team has played.
Both teams with new coaches.
Both teams with presumably a decent camp to prepare.
Sounds fun.
Good advertising opportunity too. If you were born the last time Australia held the Bledisloe, you're eligible to drink and vote this year!
Nooooooooo advertising! Last thing I want to see are are a bunch of sheep doing a haka....

So I have your vote for selector then? Sign me up.
There are a couple of others of my ilk on here too. None of them are from Canterbury (Yes I know what I just did).

Better not perfect
Nothing in rugby is perfect, the laws, the refs, the teams. I just want to see the best players play in the rep teams with no bias.
Agree.
Moody, Taylor, Alaalatoa, Whitelock, S.Barrett...

@Snowy it's called unconscious bias, our media tall about it all the time.
But I agree with you, there are some of us that can see past provincial bias 😎
Yes I know about unconscious bias, but it can be overcome with rational thought. You're not one of the people I would have picked to see past provincial bias...just saying.

he's from Northland, he's got no right to be biased about anything
