I've watched about 5 mins of SR AU on TV so that's where I'm at.
that's 5 mins more than me and i live here
apparently they have finals this weekend?
The Fox Sports news segment on sunday morning was pretty funny when they exclaimed the Rebels has made the Super Rugby finals for the first time in their history...

same, no one in Melbourne knows who the rebels are so its hard to get excited...so just for get its on, compared to the hype they manage to create about a mid season mid table (nothing game) of AFL...its a bit embarrassing

The establishment of rival code domestic teams in Melbourne is largely an ego issue. It matters not how successful they are, they simply can't gain any traction in the market.
-
thats what i mean, the AFL manages to get people invested in games without the teams being successful, a lot of it is just tradition...but a lot is hype, they do alot of work off outside the game to keep people interested...rugby just seems to think existing is enough

And to make matters worse, the two major unions don't care about Melbourne. At all. They're uninterested in making a success of the game outside of their area.

this is so bad
a 12 team competition most people don't want, with overseas equity firms owning part of it?
i cannot express how much i hate everything there
Also i couldn't give even a single fuck about a world club comp. This is what test rugby is for.
And a 16-team comp at that! You can just imagine the 8th Super team (likely an Australian team) getting absolutely pantsed by the 8th European team, which would really call into question the overall strength of Super Rugby in that format.
-
@mariner4life unless you have some interest in a particular team, why would you?
The only kiwi rugby I've watched all year was the North v South Basketball game where defense was optional.

We'd retort if any of us had managed to get through more than 5 minutes of your development comp.

i watch a lot of league and AFL that don't concern teams i support

...thats the point...RA or the franchises seem to do very little to attract new interest, even those of us that love the sport dont see any effort, your average joe probably isn't
since moving here ive been lured into following two different aussie rules teams
-
I guess you probably wouldn't notice not being particularly interested, but Fox have been aggressively working to reduce the market price of Rugby in Aus as it's still a major drawcard for the ailing Foxtel network.
Initial lowball offer for the rights, endless hatchet jobs in Ruperts rag papers, sacked pretty much the entire commentary team except for the unbearable Kafe and Kearns, stripped away pretty much all advertising for the game even in NSW and Qld. Not to mention the 'captains' witch hunt (lead by bought and paid for Kearns) which got Raelene sacked and resulted in exactly nothing else happening.
Rupert's mad Raelene took the TV rights to market.
As an aside, Loige has spent more money than RA could ever could on trying to make rugby a thing in Melbourne and have largely failed, even with a very successful storm team. It's hard to undo a hundred years of history.
-
@Derpus and i guess thats the next point..why insist on the five teams when one is pushing shit up hill in melbourne and another is currently getting flogged week in week out and on the other side of the world (perth), why not focus on a battle that is possible to win, three relatively strong teams with some good rugby history
-
@Kiwiwomble I can't really be bothered to reiterate why. I've said it before in this thread.

That argument might have some basis in reality if Fox hadn't clearly stated which sports they considered prime and made it obvious they don't see value in the others.
-
@antipodean What? so fox aren't driving down the price despite their actions resulting in exactly that because... they said so?
You must be quite the businessman.
