And the Canes were lucky not to give away another Penalty try and the ref missed at least another two shoulder charges. A real issue for them that tackling technique. Unbelievably stupid.
Well it was “Mana Moana” night after all

If I had to sum up that game it was Blues composure versus Canes lack of discipline.
Out defence and effort was incredible at times, especially considering the travel factor. And the Canes were lucky not to give away another Penalty try and the ref missed at least another two shoulder charges. A real issue for them that tackling technique. Unbelievably stupid.
It’s such a treat watching a well coached side, with an obvious game plan and the team putting out huge effort after huge effort.
Plenty to work on, lineout obviously , but this is a good team.
Return fixture for this one is going to be a beauty.
That defence coach must be ok
He has to be good at something, shame we had to go through a process of elimination.
With good selection and an actual game plan, it nice to see Tana finally making a positive contribution. Assuming of course that he’s just not doing what Coventry tells him to do.

Also, Akira played really well. That try was superb, but he was strong all game. Godo coming back with no matches under his belt
Second top tackler for the Blues, I think. No misses, lots of good tackles, some strips and good effort for his try. Was busy and worked hard, and if Robinson hadn’t gone off I expect he was due to be subbed. So had to go 80, which will be good for him.
He’s the best player we have for getting turnovers too.
Him lining up with Sotutu and Dalton would be pretty interesting!
One thing he did fantastically well all night, but especially in the second when things got a bit loose, was his clean up work. His ability to pick up messy ball, keep his feet, go forward and buy his team mates time and metres was invaluable there. Just what you want from your eighth man

Only caught the end of the game but big congrats to the Blues for finally breaking that ugly streak. Must be a massive relief and sets them up well for the season now.
Less said about the Canes the better. If you finish the game with 12 - 13 players then you should expect to lose every fucking time. Idiots.

Had some of the best defence stats last year as well.
Biggest difference at the moment is that the Blues players are finally trusting each other and the game plan. That comes with the confidence of a couple of good wins. Chicken and egg stuff but hopefully for them it sticks. They have always had potential but have been their own worst enemies at times -

@Yeetyaah Blues showing they still don’t have enough Senior players directing the traffic. Perfect chance to put a team to the sword but no one took control and accuracy was poor. But a win.
I think the important aspect was getting the monkey off their back. Last year they would've lost that game.
It's been a good few weeks for the Blues. They are clearly improving and finally getting the results to improve the confidence in their systems.
Akira had a good game too.

@Kirwan it actually feels great to have options ,as opposed to chasing our tails when we have either not picked up wins or injuries reared their ugly head..I really think this should be Parsons last season, in my opinion we going absolutely nowhere if he stays..
I’d like to win some lineouts, which we do when he’s on the park. Plenty of other ball carriers, so he can stop that.
He manages the refs well too. Had a good chat to the ref, and the next scrum we got to dominate.
He'd have a total positive benefit to the game if he didn't try running route one.

@junior Black lacks a bit of power with his kicking. How many times did he miss the line on penalty kicks? Really poor executing there but great tactically in general play.
They looked like mishits rather than weak legs to me (still unforgivable mind you). He got plenty of legs on some of his general play kicks.

Pleasantly surprised/ Well done Blues, been a long time between drinks as they say.
Shows what heart and grit and belief will do. -
Whlist I feel for Lomax )then again maybe not) players are aware of the laws amd these days a tucked shoulder is a complete no-no. A tackling technique 101 class mandatory for all Canes players this week methinks.
My beef is really with TJ. He is just not the right fit for Canes captain currently. When he should have been circling the wagons and taking stock, calming things down, he was too busy playing the wronged party like a spolt schoolboy to be effective in his core duties. Bro, guys are looking to YOU for leadership and guidance. Bit of maturity wouldn't have gone amiss here. Sadly, the cupboard was bare, and the Canes to their cost, paid the full price. -

Was at a function on Friday night with Grant Fox and Glenn Taylor, and Fox reckoned Blues would make finals but didn't have the squad to win.
Both said it was thier tight 5 making the difference this year with Taylor making special mention of Tuipuluto's form and also Robinson.

Blue's defence and general resiliance streets ahead of last year. :face_with_stuck-out_tongue:
Lineout debacle in first half meant playing for long periods with no ball, and we did well to keep things to 5 points in first quarter. Parsons/GCT made things much better, and GCT seemed to hold up well in loose. Thought the Canes locks faded in second half.
Not Faine's best game, and Plummer seemed to settle things. Ofa went much better at LH, although much of that post Lomax red. I think I prefer Marchant at 13 and Rieko on wing. Telea is real star, and reeks of X factor.
For Canes, really liked the look of Kirifi. Bloody nuisance in first half. Laumape liklewise, albeit fairly quiet in second.
