I really can't see the Wales and Scotland tour going ahead.

There's a long way to go yet. Hopefully they'll apply soap to all this hand-wringing and it will solve itself.

@Bovidae can recall Kieran Reads tackle on Rocky Elsom in the 2011 RWC semi final was an absolute beauty ,surprised Elsom still got up.

The tackle on McCabe was near halfway on the ASB stand side of the field in the 1st half.

I had a really good view of the Kaino tackle on Ioane too. 🙂

Cane would be favourite to be captain I would assume.

It's safe to say the captain will be called Sam.

If the bullshit line I was fed that the only reason Sam Whitelock lashed out in the semi was because of all the rookies around him, is even remotely true, then there is no way he can be captain.

There has been a succession of captains out of the crusaders and they have all been shit bar one. Try something different guys.

@mariner4life Foster has already decided on his captain, whoever that is. I wouldn't pick Whitelock either but I can't see anyone other than Cane or him being the choice. No point selecting a player who will be replaced during the game (e.g. front row, halfback).

Can you select a reserve as your captain? Scott Barrett for captain!

It's pretty fucking early to be going back to the Chiefs region for a coach - let alone a Waikato one! 🙂

@Chris-B I thought you'd be all for him, he's just the type of dimwitted hopeless coach you spend half your time fluffing on here (and the other half is devoted to Ta$man and Ranfurly Shield challenges).

I don't care what the reason for his lashing out was - it was simply unacceptable in the circumstances. I would be happy for him to call the line outs and nothing more.

@junior I think we all shared that view in the immediate aftermath. It was a terrible mistake

But history is littered with players that have made a small number of mistakes then gone on to be inspirational leaders.

Do we not owe him another chance?

Thtat McCaw guy did that retarded leg trip v Argentina in a RWC, he seemed a handy leader at that point.

What Whitelock did was dumb as a dumb thing, that didnt cost us the match, nor should it cost him the chance to lead us, if he is the one deemed to be our future leader

nope, cost an opportunity to get back into the game. Costs him some real added scrutiny on his leadership ability.

Makes it clear quite how good a leader the GOAT turned into - just domnated the team mentally for years

@nzzp wasnt that YC on McCaw in 2015, which was pretty much when he was at his peak leadership?

As an aside, I think Cane would be a better bet to lead, just saying I dont think that moment should define his (Whitelock) potential leadership.

Cane was completely anonymous in the early stages of the semi vs England. Just didn’t seem to show up at all.

If the captaincy comes down to a choice between a Cantab and a Chief who would Foster pick?

Does anyone think Foster wouldn't pick Cane?

Cane makes sense from a PR point of view too. It distances Foster from the failed Hansen World Cup campaign. Hansen drops Cane for the massively overrated Scott Barrett.. Foster does the opposite, he gives Cane a promotion

I'd prefer a captain that keeps his cool under pressure and doesn't let the situation get the better of them. That excludes any halfback as both Smith and TJP are too emotional. Barrett lost the plot against the Chiefs when he was one of the main offenders for the high penalty count, and the red card is a black mark against him. For that reason I would go for Cane. Not because he is a Chief or I think Foster has any bias but he seems the best option from the likely candidates.

Everyone has a bias, including Foster. I expect more Chiefs to make the squad than if Robertson was the coach.. that's not a shot at Foster, that's recognising the way subjective selections work

I think Cane is the right choice too

@Duluth True, and we'll get to see if some of the new selections last year were Hansen's or Foster's.

Has Foster coached any of these Chiefs at Super level? I doubt it. But if Robertson had won the job (and I was in his camp over Foster) he'd naturally pick players he knew over players he didn't know so well. They'd be Crusaders players most likely.

I don't think Foster is going to favour Chiefs in the same way, because he hasn't had that closeness with the current Chiefs players (outside of the ABs).
