@Bones I think the AB coaches realized this and started to remedy this problem.

@Tim Fiane is not close. He is a lightweight at 92 kegs for a second five.

@Victor-Meldrew While I agree Cane should have been selected he would not have made the difference. We were man handled in the forwards and this has been an ongoing weakness exposed by Oz in Perth. Mariner has it right that we have too many fit buggers and not enough mongrel and size.

Now Fosters teams have never been known for their forward packs so maybe we are screwed. So I got the obligatory stab at our new AB coach out of the way. He is just too happy with life. Someone should hit him the shins with a 9 iron.

I think we are set at prop. So many options and Karl is playing himself back in the mix. Cane has been a good servant of NZ rugby but is it time to move on. Ginger and Papalii have been good and Sotutu the flavor on the month for good reason. PT has lifted his work rate and is looking good. Through in a token Cantab and we should be good despite Foster.

🙂 Blues win a couple of games and the fans start to get cocky.

@booboo yeah I am surprised the 'time to move on from Cane' comment hasn't caused a Fern meltdown 😀

@broughie Not many options at 12 this season. Any young players coming through?

Still the best NZ back row player. 😉

Does anyone know how big the squad is for the July Wales/Scotland games?

It will be interesting to see what they do with the third 7 (behind Cane and Ardie). Given Cane and Ardie can play multiple positions i'd be fairly confident they'll look at another 7 option in the squad.

Boshier has been in outstanding form, Christie has started his Super career terrifically and Papalii wants to play 7 and after his showing vs Stormers may get a prolonged shot there for the Blues.

Apart from Laumape the other midfielders can play 12 or 13 so I'm not sure they will be looking for a specialist 2nd 5.

    But but don't we need a 2nd 5 that's also a 1st 5? Apparently it's all the rage.

    12 only: Laumape
    12-13: ALB, Goodhue
    13-wing: Ennor
    12-13-15(-10): Havili, J Barrett

I assume, in case of injuries, they can all cover wing.

Yeah 9s are often wing emergency cover, so yeah

@Stargazer add in Aso who can play 11, 12, 13, 14. Needs to work on his defence though.

13-wing : Ioane ? Not yet the best option but he has already played a good number of minutes as a centre for the ABs.

Forget the backs, we need more big mobile locks with a lot of mongrel who can play for at least 60 minutes. Too many locks around 110kg-115kg.

@cgrant I'm still on the fence. Rieko Ioane has to improve a lot to come into the ABs midfield (other than as an emergency injury cover). He was terrible against the Stormers, but it's early days. He needs to play there consistently to improve, so give him time.

I didn't name Aso, yet, for the same reason (e.g. not quite there, yet), but IMO he's ahead of Ioane at the moment for a spot in the ABs midfield.

He was far from terrible, that's not accurate at all. Also, he's played centre a few times for the All Blacks already.

Aso vs Rieko this weekend should be a good one to keep an eye on.

but he's behind proven midfield test players like Jordie Barrett...

I don't get the Jordie hate either, very useful to have a player that can play 15,wing,12 and 10 at a pinch. Not mention his goalkicking.

If we had dumped Nonu when he was at the same stage of his career making all his mistakes we'd have missed out on one of the greats. These players are in their early 20s!
