@MajorRage inexperienced as a head coach at international level you mean? He'd coached the forwards in both Ireland and England.
General experience. Mitchell had only a few months head coach experience I think. Robertson has zero overseas experience.

I think Henry has also said that he expects Razor to be the AB coach - just not this time round it seems. I reckon the harder Henry pushes the more he probably rates you. Possibly a hangover from his principal days.
Ted has also been pretty self-critical on his preparedness for the Welsh and Lions roles in parts and he had decades more experience than Razor (different time of course).
@Hooroo said in All Black Coach - Ian Foster:
I opened that thinking it was going to be a big whine by Robertson.
The bit about them obviously wanting continuity is a bit of a whine, but certainly not of Deans proportions after 2007.
I do really wish Rennie and/or Joseph had have put their hand up and the process hadn't been so binary as continuity vs change.

John Mitchell gets an awful lot of crap for a bloke that won two out of two Tri-Nations, won back the bledisloe (after how many years?) Coached a team that put 50 past Aus and SA away in consecutive weeks.
I'm not saying he was a great coach, but he's far from terrible. His assistant coaching results would point to that. John's problem appears to be his complete inability to get along with people when he is in charge.

Kind of a big problem for a high profile coach. He acted like an A-hole in front of the media and to many of his players

indeed, but in a results based industry...
I'm just waiting for Nepia, because no one ever gets tired of listening to how he retired Cullen....

If you choose to act like that you had better keep winning, and he lost the big prize. At that time the standard operating procedure was to get rid of the losing coach. Don't get me started about his poor treatment of CC, one of the AB greats

Cullen was done in 2003

I also think his public persona/personality doesn't/didn't do him any favours either (not saying ideally it should matter but it does). He's an aloof kind of bloke. Talk of journeys etc.

which no one would have given a toss about if he had won the World Cup like we all pretty much expected.

Sure. I'm talking about looking back now and your reference of "gets an awful lot of crap".

At the time we looked like we were strongly turning the corner from the dross of 98 - 01. But with the benefit of hindsight, Mitchell's All Blacks still had an underpowered scrum, and the defence was as leaky as the Team NZ boat of the same year. Letting in 37 points against Wales probably wasn't a good sign of a tournament winning team.
Fitness was much better though, and he did a bloody good job with the Chiefs.
-
@mariner4life He pissed the sponsors off so much that he would've been gone anyway from what I heard at the time.
A family friend was an exec at Coke Australia then, was super angry about Mitchell, and apparently that was a universally held view.

@Bovidae said in All Black Coach - Ian Foster:
It would have been interesting to see the 2023 RWC squad that Robertson said he had planned, and how many Crusaders players he squeezed into it. It could have been the Cantablacks v2.
wasn't it mainly a cantablack forward pack that got bitch slapped all over the Olympic Stadium?

Was going to let the @mariner4life rancid bait pass as all the negativity due to CV is starting to wear on me, but I can't fucking let this one go.
Bloody good job?!!!!!! He did bog standard average like all the other Chief coaches in that period. Finished with a positive win/loss record - had been done twice before, finished 6th on the table - had been done twice before.

@Nepia from memory he took one of the weaker 'paper' squads that they'd had in the first few years of Super 12 and didn't finish 11th. At the time that genuinely felt like a good Chiefs season!!
Your definition of bloody good and mine differ but you get the like for the bold.

We started off a very low base. 1998 was the closest I remember us getting to not-mud, but a shithouse loss against the Tah's killed any late semi final chance.
