I think the midfield trio will be horses for courses, even into knock outs. Maybe not

Can't see Weber being used past pool play.

    Totally agree

TJ sucked tonight, but there is no way we are replacing A Smith with Weber with 10mins to go in a RWC knockout game.

Has anyone forced their way into the top 23 if SA Selection for game one is the top 23 ?

    Weber perhaps?

Game changed when he came on great pass and runs great support lines would not have thought that was a chance to take TJs spot before the WC but Webber was very good.

It depends on if the coaches are going to read anything into the play from the match.

I doubt they will, but the backline seemed to run much better when TJP went off.

    Japanese play-book

You realise that the "Japanese play-book" is basically the NZ rugby playbook right down to schoolboy level right? I was taught as a kid 40 years ago about 'Power, Possession, Pace'.

Even 16 and 20 years on all roads lead to an untested centre combo and the temptation of using an inexperienced halfback to close out the game...

If we are going to lose this RWC can we at least do it in an original way?

Nope. Maybe Jordie on bench for bender. Webb for TJ, but TJ was great Vs SA so I don't think so

You would think Hansen and co know exactly who are playing the SF and Final if we make it
So maybe Game one v SA is the 23

Weber is an excellent halfback to play against teams outside of the powerhouse teams, but I'd be very nervous with him playing against SA, England, Ireland, Wales, France....maybe not Aus. His speed and anticipation are great, but I don't think he measures up to Smith or Perenara against the big teams.

Yeah Weber is arguably more useful to play against the minnows than Perenara. Weber's lightning fast service and decisiveness on attack opens everything up whereas Perenara plays minnows like he is playing trick shot pool.

Ok all jokes aside about Rieko, there is no doubt that on current form he's not in the big match day 23.

However, I think Rieko's ceiling is much higher than that of either Bridge or Reece, and therefore he should be given much opportunity to regain confidence & form. I would do that via 60 minutes (at least) in both of the remaining pool matches, as Bridge & Reece should both get time as well.

I'm still a bit lost on Ben Smith. Arguably my biggest man crush of the last few years, but he just doesn't look as dynamic as either of the two (current) incumbents ... and its clear the Mo'ounga / Barrett combo is not going to change.

    Decisions, decisions.

The latest World Rugby news, including about the World Rankings, Tournaments, Player Welfare and the Laws of the Game

The man who masterminded the All Blacks' RWC 2015 triumph said that his team could learn a thing or two from the breathless and inventive nature of the Japanese attacking.

"We'd be very silly if we didn't because they did plenty to give us to think about," said Hansen on Monday. "Their speed of ball was great, their line speed awesome, they just kept coming, time after time after time.

"They showed a lot of courage, intent and a lot of skill, so hats off to them. It was a really great performance and one the whole of Japan should be proud of.

"We like to play fast. I don't know if we want to play that fast - or if we can play that fast. In the humidity, it certainly affected the Irish, that speed of the game."

Hard to say, because he's played much more test rugby. They're also very different players with different skill sets. Reece may be a bit more limited, but I think Bridge has the potential to become a star like Rieko.

I thought Rieko started to show some positive signs in the second half. Something to build on.

He's still a long way behind Bridge and Reece at the moment though. They are the clear cut starters.

Todd didn't play against S Africa; he suffered a minor injury before that game and probably would have been in the 23 without the injury. So he might play in the big games (from the bench).

It's weird what's happening with Ioane eh. Have to wonder if it's something to do with the way the AB's play that he's really struggling to adjust to? He was pretty good for the Blues this season wasn't he? Same with Ben Smith - both at the moment just seem to really struggle with finding/creating space and just look lacklustre.

I'm not so sure on Ioane's ceiling being that much higher though. Some positive signs today for sure.
