Bottom line for me is that this squad is good enough to win the cup.

The ABs will need to avoid bad luck with injuries and learn to manage referees better than they have in recent years, but they have the talent to win a Third RWC in a row.

They have Jordie, TJ and Crotty as people who can play first five at a pinch.

All those people rubbishing me when I said Jordie was our third 10 after DMac got injured can suck it! 🙂

There's no "our" about this one. He's not my third 10.

    Not my president 🙂

Apart from Crotty, I wonder if any of the other 30 will be available for M10 Cup this round? They may only go into camp on Sunday for the Tongan test.

The team has been picked. Just like Beaver in 2011, and the people who groaned when he came on in the final, they are all ours now

If you take a 3rd ten who do you drop?

Basically an outside back. Which one then?

    Reece

Five midfielders none of which can play wing is the issue, whereas in 2011 all except Smith had been used at test level.

Pretty sure SBW has played on the wing for the ABs. Just saying.

In a RWC QF no less, but obviously wouldn't be considered as cover at this stage. Just strange to have no midfielders than can cover wing, or fullbacks/second-fives that can cover first-five. Basically the inverse of 2007 where we had coverage four or five deep for every position.

Which is a good thing right? Given how 2007 played out...

Wish someone had asked Hansen why Ennor got minimal chance to show his stuff. Seems like he was already fringe right from the start.

@rotated I reckon they should have given ALB a run on the wing, he looks quick enough and is an elusive runner.

Is the team for the Tonga test drawn from the Rugby Championship squad or the WC squad? I ask because it would be a good opportunity to give a few standby players - Josh Ioane, Squire and Laumape - game time.

He played a bit there for the Chiefs in the early days so hopefully he has muscle memory in case he needs to become the new Kahui - but we're pretty covered at wing anyway.

I also remember Goodhue being on the wing for the U20s.

IIRC Vito ended up on the wing in a RWC game.

@Billy-Tell Jacobson didn't get that much chance and still made the squad. I think that training would have been a good part of the decision making too

I'm not worried about wing cover at a pinch, just that there isn't a true midfield/wing tweener that would have allowed Laumape to be selected over Reece.

In a pinch we are well covered on the wing.

Join us on the All Blacks Edition tonight at 8pm we'll be talking about the Rugby World Cup squad that's been announced today. Some of the talking points will be:

    • Franks out and Moli in
    • Retallick not going to be fit for the group stages
    • Luke Jacobson in and Squire on injury standb
    • Jordie, TJ, Crotty and Ben Smith called out as match-day cover for 10

the more i read that, the more it freaks me right the fuck out.

Can you imagine if, prior to the Boks game, or a knockout, Mounga goes down in the captains run. The ABs are then forced to move Barrett to 10, meaning a change at 10 and 15. Barrett then goes down in the first quarter.

    And in walks...

I think he was only picked in the TRC squad because at that point, both SBW and Crotty were injured.
