Proof that SBW is running hard at rush defences and is a genuine threat. They want him as he does more than anyone else in that physical contact, followed by offloading in ridiculous situations. His league background suits him down to the ground at 12 I reckon (shoulder charges excepted)

It's a good theory which hardly ever works out. IMHO SBW is just too flaky to base a midfield around. Multiple fuck-ups for each miracle off-load - that's when he's not injured
Just concerned we end up going into crucial games with a 12/13 combo (sans SBW) which could benefit with some serious game time.

Keeping our Cane and Ardie powder dry. If we win we can wave them in front of SA faces for the WC game. If we don't get over the line we can say it was a weaker loose trio.
Digging the backline and very interested to see how our pack goes against a really strong SA team.
Nice way to bring some extra sizzle to the championship!!

I'm not necessarily in agreement, but I think that's what the Coaches see in him- a point of difference. They keep picking him despite any form, fitness or game time for that matter, so I figure that's the master strategy.
I don't disagree that we need a settled midfield. Chopping and changing (aka R+R perhaps???) is not good for our long term game in RWC year. Need to play together starting pretty much now, and hope like fark we don't cop too many key injuries.
People forget quickly how injury ravaged the ABs were against the Lions. We lost so many good players so quickly, and the Lions hardly lost anyone at all. Then we got the Dubya card and suspension, and that's all she wrote. Despite that, we won Test 1 handily, damn near burgled test 2 with 14 players, and were a dodgy dodgy call away from taking Test 3.

They were winning for a grand total of a few minutes in the entire series, and only after we were down a forward for 50 odd minutes. But, like the cricket, all people see is the W (but unlike the cricket they made a draw a draw).

Todd i can deal with. Bit strange not having Ardie or Cane on the bench but Boks will be a good test for Pap’s.
Looking forward to seeing how Frizzel goes too.SBW needed a run to see if he is actually up to it anymore. Im picking he won’t last the game and will pick up another 6-8 week injury.
Really like the look of that 10-14-15 set up. Lots of people said it would never happen. Hoping it goes well and can become a realistic option for the big games.

Not picking a specialist lock on the bench and instead two two loosies would be pretty concerning for Tuipolotou, who's definitely 4th lock at best once Barrett is fit.
Patty T is safe to me. He is just locked in a weird position where he can't force play his way into the match day 22 and there seems little appetite to supplant him as the fourth best lock. They need to take specialist lock coverage given Whitelock/Rettalick will be carried in the squad if injured early but still have the potential of coming right for a semi or final.
They only took 3 specialist locks in 2015 so I see Patty T on the outside looking in for Japan. The selection of Fifita suggests a lock/6 or 6/lock (however you want to describe the player) is their preferred option for the 4th lock. Even Frizell has been mentioned as a backup lock. If they think they have the cover at lock the makeup of the loose forwards can be tweaked (e.g., taking Todd).

Agree, and when SBW doesn't stuff up his basic passing skills are not up to international midfield standard. He lacks the instinct to consistently put players in in a good position - whether it be through bad timing or bad execution (watch how many times players have to stop to catch one of his passes rather than run on to it in space).

Chicago likely changed their perception of the limits of covering lock with non-specialists. They very likely could roll the dice and take three specialists plus Fifita/Frizell like you suggest - but with all three in top 23 that will be some tall timber playing a lot of minutes four years older. For that to happen though they would want all three at 100% health.
The problem isn't a potentially tournament ending injury - the replacement is academic, it's Brodie or Whitelock picking up a 4-6 week injury in the Tongan test or vs the Boks.

@Crazy-Horse I think it is clear to see SBW has been a key figure in the coaches plans for the past 18 months, just his injuries and Goodhue getting ill has hindered the chances of them forming a partnership, and now I think we finally get what I think is thier preferred mid-field pairing, it is now upto SBW to deliver.
My preference would still be ALB-JG, but I guess we will see after Saturday.

@taniwharugby yeah the SBW/Goodhue combo looked good when they did get the chance (against France wasn't it? If it was the same game McKenzie looked good at 10, I am not sure how much credence we can give that performance).
