    @Stargazer

PUJ might look to move if he doesn't get enough game time

Pleased that Goosen has signed on for a few years. He's a class player that is underrated on here. Hands are good. Defense first rate. Fast. And usually his decision making is also spot on. Slightly injury prone though.

Now we need to sign Walker Leawere. And one more class lock

@Winger PUJ is a starter for me. I'd have him and Laumape in the centres, I'd get get rid of Lam (useless on D) and put Aso and Goosen on the wings, with Barrett at fullback. Then Toala or B Proctor on the bench.

Agreed, we need to sign IWL, he is a beast. A future All Black for sure. I haven't seen enough of Scrafton to gauge whether or not he is starting potential, but hopefully Plumtree moves away from Blackwell because he seriously hinders our lineout with his height.

We obviously also need to sign a quality First Five.

    Official:

The Hurricanes have signed Jamie Booth and Jonathan Taumateine for 2020 and 2021.

The Hurricanes have signed halfbacks Jamie Booth and Jonathan Taumateine for the next two Investec Super Rugby seasons.

The pair replace Richard Judd and Finlay Christie, with the former leaving the Hurricanes to take up a contract in Japan while the latter signed for the Blues.

Booth, who was schooled at Palmerston North Boys' High School, is no stranger to the Hurricanes having been a member of the wider training squad in 2016 before returning in 2018 when he made eight appearances.

The 24-year-old left the capital to play for the Sunwolves in the 2019 where he established himself as their first choice halfback. He has also returned to Manawatu to play in the Mitre 10 Cup.

Taumateine, 22, has taken the opportunity to move south after previously representing the Chiefs.

The former Samoa and New Zealand Under-20 representative has impressed in recent seasons with Counties Manukau.

Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree welcomed Booth back into the squad while he believed Taumateine would be a positive addition to the 2020 squad.

@Stargazer So I guess Fakatava is going to remain as a Highlander then ... par for the course for the Canes ....

@Nepia I can only hope that the Canes haven't signed Fakatava because he has already signed with the Highlanders. If he hasn't, the Canes are just being stupid again.

I'm kind of hoping the Chiefs have signed Fakatava and McClutchie.

@Nepia Would be interesting if they already have Falcon on the books, too. They again posted the article on their social media about what he's been doing during his injury break (studying), which seems to suggest they have re-signed him.

Yeah, I assume if they invested in him they'll keep him - I'm unconvinced, due to his performances not just the fact he went to Lindersfarne. 😉 Hopefully McClutchie plays well enough to pick up a contract this year in one of the teams.

    🤔

Chris Gibbes joins Hurricanes as assistant coach

Widely respected coach Chris Gibbes has joined the Hurricanes on a two-year deal as an assistant coach.

Gibbes, 46, will leave his role as head coach of the Wellington Lions at the end of the Mitre 10 Cup season to join the Hurricanes coaching ranks where he will take over from the departed Richard Watt.

A former Waikato head coach, who led the side to two ITM Cup finals, as well as Ranfurly Shield success, Gibbes has also had international roles with Japan and Georgia, New Zealand Under 20 while he was the forwards coach at Pro 14 side Ospreys for four years before he returned to take up the Wellington job in 2017.

Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree believed Gibbes would excel in the role as forwards coach with a pack that was continually being strengthened.

@Machpants Not sure. Wellington hasn't won anything under him; they're not going great at the moment either. I'm also afraid it will increase the Wellington bias of the Hurricanes even more.

@Stargazer bias is a good point. But remember how previous welly coach went > then onto win SR for canes! NPC is such a lottery, players wise. It's very hard, over such a short period to make an impact. It's part time

I know nothing about the guy but he is going in as assistant, not head coach. I think bias these days is overblown. Plumtree has spent more time coaching in SA over the last 10 years than Wellington, and Gibbes is a traveller as well. He's coached and won with the Mooloos, they always have good packs, lets see how he goes. I am more concerned about us finding a decent option at 10
