He sure as hell is a nice insurance policy.
If you did a risk log on the RWC you would have both SBW and Crotty as high likelihood, medium impact red risks of not making it through injury. Mitigation is Nonu.

Hard to say when most of us haven't seen him play yet this year. But if he still has it and is one of the top four centres in NZ, then he absolutely has to be selected.

Yep, at any given time one of those two will be out. Be good to have another senior guy who could just step in at a RWC if needed (assuming his form is good of course).

Im tipping his super rugby form will cause all sorts of debate in regards to his selection ,

remembering his super rugby form used to be a massive talking point during his peak

Let's hope that the Blues 9 & 10 can get him some ball to see how he's going.

Having SBW and Nonu both available will cause some headaches selection wise though as you don't want to keep playing mix and match in the centres.

It's tough to say because injuries will likely play a big part in the selection in the midfield.

Assuming everyone is fit I think he needs to either SBW or Crotty's spot.

The Blues have co-captains (Gibson and Tuipulotu) and they also have a vice captain in the backs - SBW

Thats suggests MacDonald is planning on picking SBW when everyone is available

If Nonu still has wheels at 37 then it will come down to the service from Aaron & Beauden.

Ma’a ma’a black streak have you any ball?

I'm pleased that he has the ABs as a goal, he might put in an effort for the Blues this time. I can't see him making it though. Surely at 37 he'll be as injury prone as SBE or Crotty?

@Rancid-Schnitzel never heard any negatives and those team owners aren't shy expressing dissatisfaction with their star imports. Also caught reports that he's in awesome shape so that's a really good sign. Maybe all that yoga paid off!!
The thing I like the most is that he knows his rep ain't enough, well at least to snare a starting spot. I don't see him wanting to diminish his AB legacy by getting in without compelling form and kicking ass on the way.
Hope this lights a fire for SBW and others in the mix. On for young and old(er)!!!

Yeah I hope his mere presence in NZ will make a difference. That is often lamented as the one thing NZ has lost with players going overseas, i. e. the wise old heads imparting their knowledge on the youngsters. Personally I'd prefer to cast 2015 Nonu in stone, but if he's still got it then it would be great to have him. The midfield is a huge concern.

I’m more interested in how much time he’ll get at the Blues. I see him as a bench option that has the odd start here or there.

If he plays the impact player role then that might be attractive to the ABs, but then again I reckon ALB plays that part pretty well.

Nonu might well be seeing plenty of time at 13 for the Blues - there's not a lot of 13 experience for the Blues when you factor in that they are committing to playing Rieko on the wing. Nonu, Aumua and Tele'a look to be the 13 options with the latter two having limited to zero Super Rugby experience.

The midfield is a huge concern.

it fucking wouldn't be if the coaches picked the two best guys and played them more.

or, you know, we could keep chopping and changing every test, and keep trying to start two guys who can't string 2 halves of rugby together, let alone two consecutive games.

And that's before you start talking about the game management from 10...

As long as SBW takes all the time he needs to get back to form and fitness we'll be fine.

Let's not go blaming the backs for the inability of the forwards to set a reasonable platform.

@mariner4life it does suck that Crotty is so brittle, as when he's healthy he's bloody good. But I like ALB paired with goodhue, they just haven't had enough time together imo. Laumape will have to show a lot of development to push for more starting minutes, then there's SBW as incumbent (actually is it crotty?). BB will be our starter unless some real shit goes down this season, so that adds some spice around the mix of skills they want at 12.
