Looks like we could be facing an England team in even more disarray come June
Yeah, we’re all over the shop at present. That Mirror article suggests some laughable captaincy options but highlights the sad truth that we just don’t have that much choice. I read another article recently about our search for an opening pair and all it came up with was bring back Rory Burns and find some other bloke from somewhere.
Burns being mentioned is the kind of nightmare scenario akin to Lee Germon being drafted in as a specialist captain for the BCs in the 90s.
But still, we have shown vulnerability and horrible inconsistency at home of late let alone over in English conditions. Plus there are a few English match winners provided they bring the old boys back to speahead the bowling. It will be a compelling series.

Burns has been the best of an awful bunch. It’s not just the openers either. I think from memory he was the second highest England scorer in the Ashes? What does that tell you? We have no reliable batsmen save for Root. We have a few crash bang wallop merchants that have a fantastic highlight reel and Stokes when he’s fit and available.

Bairstow is pretty handy.

Previously I’d have put him in the crash, bang, wallop bunch, but then, after a fairly long run of poor form he seems to have rediscovered himself. Though how much we can take from those first two tests in WI I don’t know.

Well this time last year I’d have backed the BCs to win this comfortably. This year I’m not so sure. Not so much England improving, they’re not…..more a case of us showing vulnerability and lack of depth when things aren’t going well. Big pressure on KW coming back and firing again both as a batsman and captain. The team is all at sea without him.

Wasn't sure where to put this, would have fitted perfectly on Awesome Stuff, Stupid Stuff and here ... edit: I think it's better without sound ...
Is this a blind team ? I’m not sure how people can be that shit at catching and fielding

A nice one here for the Stattoes amongst us. My poor old Kent team on the wrong end of a record. Surrey amass 671-9 declared. The highest first class score without anyone making a century.

How many runs did Extras contribute?

Good question: only 11 though. Seven guys made 50 without reaching a ton, which is also a record I believe.

@Catogrande How many instances of three batsmen out in the 90's in same innings? I can't find the Stat 0- just that it has never happened in tests.
Hashim Amla's 12 very noticeable. CdG run out in 60's (for the Kiwi's interest)

No idea I’m afraid, but I love cricket for those “didn’t quite make it” stats that mean someone has done well but sort of fallen short. The two really great ones are of course Bradman going cheaply in his final innings and having to settle for an average of just under a hundred. Then poor old Jim Laker having Tony Locke take one wicket in the second innings to leave him with only 19 wickets in the test.
Edit: I see that Lock (no e) actually took his wicket early in the first innings.

…..and of course from a kiwi perspective Paddles taking the catch off Vaughan Brown ( who ? ) to deny himself a shot at ten wickets in the match.
I also remember this one from back in the days when you had to read the newspaper to get cricket news………Mark Waugh falling one run short of becoming the first team to get the first four batsmen centuries……
Bugger.

That scorecard makes grim reading for an Englishman. Brings back some dark memories.
As a cricket lover that series was compelling viewing though.
Graham Gooch got player of the series too if I remember rightly ?

Gooch and Warnie shared that accolade. Compelling? I remember it as being pretty one sided and Wiki confirms this. 4-1 with one match drawn. 2 innings+ defeats and a consolation victory in the last match. Aussies with one foot on the plane home. Good individual battles though. Gooch standing up to the new larrikin Warne.
