Chandimal goes 6 6 to get to 200 with a no 11 at the other end. SL 554/9, lead by 190 and still batting. It's ridiculous - Australia bowled them out twice in 80 overs, and are now 180 overs in.
Lyon's rested, only 6 overs today. Swepson bowling plenty now. Carn Sri Lanka
Tests in Sri Lanka sure are high scoring affairs.
Makes Muralis 800 wickets even more impressive to be fair.
Murali bowled the msot balls in test cricket history. He worked for his wickets for sure. Dead set legend.
Oh for sure. Throwing or not his record is just fucken ridiculous. THIRTY more Michelles than Warnie……
Here’s another stat. Very good bowlers like Bob Willis, Joel Garner, Jason Gillespie, Brett Lee, Morne Morkel and Neil Wagner ( I love Wags ) never got ten wickets in a match….Murali did it TWENTY TWO times !!!!
Bloody hell, mind boggling stuff.
He’s clearly as much Sri Lanka’s greatest cricketer as Paddles is ours ( well, Sangakkara was incredible too )

well, well well, didnt see that coming, Australia collapse and lose. The Smith review was extremely comical

That's a rapid collapse, last I looked they were 40/0 and cruising at about three and a half an over...

Jayasuria had them in all sorts.
Speaking of reviews, when Labuschagne was plum LBW, he wanted to review it badly. Him and Green discussed it and it looked like Green talked him out of it. Labuschagne is worst than Watson when it comes to reviews.

Think how many more wickets Warnie might have got if he didn’t have McGrath down the other end taking over 500 of the bastards.

Yep, not for a second taking away how utterly amazing Paddles was……but he didn’t have anyone even close at the other end……like not even Southee/Boult/Wags good.

Crumbs, that’s a hell of a collapse for the Australians there.
@NTA what happened ?
( please note this is not a @Virgil type dig, genuine question )
they spent 180 overs in the field, then had to go in to bat on a turning track with tired legs.
Test Cricket 101.

Seriously though, you're right - but Warne didn't have to bowl at the good Aussie batsmen either. It's like Paddles - there were more wickets available, but you do a LOT more bowling as a result.

Yeah but that Australian top order has become very strong. Woulda thought one of them would have stepped up.

I saw the first wicket of Warner. He tried to sweep a ball, missed and the ball was hitting middle stump. Reviewed anyway. Ball was doing a bit, but I didn't see the next 9 wickets; it went to a break and I had family commitments.
@NTA may have watched of course

neither do I. It's not on the regular sporting channels here.
Sorry @MN5 can't help
No probs. We’ll just have to come to the conclusion that Australian cricket is on a decline like the Black Caps. Sweet.

nope, but a drawn series makes it damn hard to make the WTC final. Big loss for them.

I think that illustrates one of the beauties of cricket, the many variables that can influence the stats in what is a really stats heavy game.
Did Warne pick up more wickets due to the pressure that McGrath caused at the other end or was he denied wickets he might have had due to McGrath’s excellence? If Sri Lanka had a really good long time partner for Murali, would he have got more or less wickets? Is Paddles’ record more impressive be cause he never got to bowl against the NZ batsmen of the time? Would Botham have got more wickets if he did any training and lost weight or would he have been injured all the time like most English bowlers that were any good?

I think the variables is far more applicable to bowlers.
If you’re a good batsman you’ll get runs, simple as that…..
Paddles would have ripped through his own batting line ups with ease. No padding his stats with minnows in his days ( although some piston wristed gibbons argue the Australian team of 85 was weak )
Botham in the first half of his career was ridiculous, then he was pretty much there solely on reputation for the second half. Hard to say exactly why.
I mentioned Joel Garner before. 59 tests and just the seven Michelles and no 10fers. On first glance that would put him in a pretty ordinary sort of bracket til you realise his average is a ridiculous 20.98 ( just over a run better than Paddles ). The thing with Garner was he rarely opened the bowling, Holding, Roberts or Croft did then Marshall and even Walsh later in his career. Garner was the perfect third seamer who came on, bounced batsmen, put pressure on and got lots of 2-40 or 3-60 type figures. He had to essentially fight with three other awesome pace bowlers to get a share of the ten wickets.
McGrath and Warne were just a special duo. Not sure cricket has seen anything like that quality……but then again that top seven batting line up ( can’t forget Gilly at 5th drop ) made their lives so easy a lot of the time.
-
Jason Gillespie, the 3rd guy in the attack, took 260 @ 26
Brett Lee is the 4th guy and he took 310 @ 31
it's basically the most ridiculous fucking attack. How easy did Ponting fucking have it?
Fuck, my two all-time great bowlers need a break, i'll toss the ball to a couple of guys who would open the bowling for literally any team in the world

Even the “lesser” players like those two, Langer, Martyn etc were still bloody good. What a team.
