Paul v Woodley in the early hours of Sunday (UK time)

Paul vs Woodley LIVE: Full results, plus backstage clash and McGregor reaction

Jake Paul beat Tyron Woodley by split decision in a tense eight-round fight to extend his unbeaten start to his boxing career. The controversial YouTuber, aka ‘The Problem Child’, secured successiv…

    Some interesting undercard bouts too

One side of me is hoping for Woodley to knock his teeth out.

Other side is saying 'keep on truckin'

Paul is one of the biggest paydays in boxing at the moment

Yet another insult to a once proud sport.

I think the main problem for the sport right now isn’t this , I mean if you don’t like it give it the attention it deserves ,

But management teams protecting fighters records , , the sport is stacked with talent through the divisions , that hasn’t changed , but getting the match ups the fans want is another issue .

That’s nothing new…..fighters have dodged eachother for yonks. Foreman apparently ducked Earnie Shavers, Tyson apparently ducked Foreman….Norton and Frazier never fought cos they were close friends……the Klitschkos never fought cos they promised their Mum they wouldn’t etc.

yeah its worse now , there might have been a bit of ducking , that part will always happen ,but we still had multiple great match ups in that era and frequently .

Now the problem is more business related .

We have fighters with different management teams who are contracted to different TV networks , who protect their cash cow , who dont like to do business with other fighters unless they are in the same management team with the same TV network , particularly when belts are involved .

The UFC has the better set up where they pretty much all fight under the same umbrella , fights get made with ease in comparison .

I remember last lockdown I had a great time watching old videos of the history of boxing and all the great champs of yesteryear ( I mainly focussed on heavyweights ) I’ve also read numerous articles on the state of boxing nowadays and how inferior todays heavyweights are. Basically in a nutshell Fury ( big, great boxer but no power ) Wilder ( great power but can’t box ) Ruiz ( no conditioning ) and Joshua ( weak chin, no heart ).

I think I mentioned it before but “boxing” as a sport may go the way of the dodo in 10 or 20 years. That would upset me hugely. I love Fury and Wilder though, I really hope their fight generates at least some excitement and interest.

@kiwiinmelb I’m one of the casual fans that the sport relies on for big money and from my viewpoint all I tend to see is matches announced 9 months out that you know have only a slim chance of actually happening due to other claims, injuries, pull-outs etc.
No one gets excited because the gaps are too long and rivalries don’t progress.
We have a prime target belt holder in heavyweight that still looks like an imposter and years pass between challenges to his position.

Yeah but, again, this isn’t really anything new. Remember how long Tyson/Holyfield took to actually happen ?

The problem is the lack of talent in the heavyweight division. If someone could Frankenstein the best of Fury and Wilder you’d end up with one of the best fighters in history…….but until that happens the sport will suffer.

No doubt the depth in the heavyweight ranks isnt what it was , but it is still very strong in other divisions .

And its the US is where it has changed ,but its been happening for a while now , no secret but the naturally gifted big black elite athletes in the US that may have walked into a boxing gym many years ago while they were young . Are far more likely now to get snaffled up by NFL and NBA talent scouts at a young age and go that direction .

Oh for sure. Today one can easily picture George Foreman being a football tight end, Ken Norton a decathlete ( he actually was a superb Track and Field athlete ) etc. If Tyson was 30 years younger he’d be the most feared MMA fighter of this generation ( where he would be exceptional )…..all of that is pretty much guaranteed.

Boxing is lucky Deontay Wilder went down that path instead of basketball where his frame looks much more suited.

I would rather watch Canelo Alvarez fight right now than the heavyweights , he is the best boxer on the planet for me ,

I grew up watching the Ali , Frazier era , and the heavyweight division has never been the same since for me ,

then we had the 4 kings all fighting each other, another great era , probably my second favorite era ,

But while the heavyweight division isnt what it was , I still think its better than the Klitchko era , at least we still have some potential interesting match ups .

I think the Uk deserve a lot credit for what they have contributed to the sport in recent times , it is booming there .

Yep, I do love a good power puncher.

The 90s/2000s was a very good era too though. Holyfield, Lewis, Tyson ( not at the level he was ), Bowe etc all made for some awesome fights.

The four kings you refer to, Ali/Frazier/Foreman obviously but who is the 4th ? Norton ? Holmes ? Shavers ?

    The 70s heavyweights my favorite

    four kings my second , welterwights/middleweights - Leonard , Hearns , Hagler , Duran great era ,

watched a great doco quite a few times now on the history of the heavyweights featuring the late great emanuel steward and where he ranks them all ,

he possibly shows a little bias towards ones he has trained but thats a bit understandable and ok , geat if your looking for something to watch during lockdown 🙂

Tyron Woodley should be kicking himself, if only he actually could get the motivation to lift his own leg.

Patient and controlled despite losing the first 4 rounds he had the opportunity to finish Paul and backed off

    And that was his undoing

A decent watch, with Paul showing he has the right stuff.

He may be the smartest man in the room, handpicking his opponents and being both the hero and heel in equal measure.

People tune in to see him win.

People tune in to hopefully see him get knocked the fuck out.

All the while he’s the hot ticket making bank

That fight was the most rigged fight I've seen for many a year. Tyron could have had him if he wanted but backed off for a reason.

Edit - ok maybe since Paul vs Askren....

Virtually everything I’ve read about it confirms what you’re saying. I’m sure Woodley was offered a fair stack of cash to NOT knock him the fuck out.

I think the most apt comment I read was someone saying the Paul brothers are like Professional Tennis players who only play against table tennis or squash players.

@mikethesnow FWIW, I don't mind Jake Paul headlining shows like this. It gives proper fighters on his shows a bit of exposure to different audiences like Dubois, Montana Love etc. whilst fighters like Serrano who wouldn't have probably had any huge paydays despite having a successful pro career, get a well deserved payday so yeah, good on Jake Paul. He's probably doing more for boxing than people think, despite going about it in a rather unorthodox fashion.

Just a passing comment, politics doesn’t interest me too much.

Evander must need the child support money, that’s the only reason I can see him doing this.
