Message to Joe Schmidt

My reading of the situation is that Schmidt will stay in Ireland. This has been a crafty news management by the IRFU.
Why the need to be crafty?
-
My guess is he’s leaving and IRFU is continuing to negotiate and sweeten the pot.
Could be an auction. Reminds me a little of the Nike contract offer for the ABs kit all those years ago, when we were CONVINCED they were getting the contract, and then at the 11th hour Adidas swooped in and gave the better offer and surprised us all. So I won’t be the slightest bit surprised if Ireland retains him or (god forbid!!) some desperate sad-sack outfit like the Wallabies throw millions under his nose and offer to put the wife and kids on the payroll, too.

How long is Foster and McLeods contracts? Could these have bearing on any decision he (or anyone else) makes?

The head coach has generally been able to appoint their assistants since they moved away from the provincial horsetrading system in 2001. Can't imagine a new head coach being able to appoint their own staff.
-
If Schmidt gets it, he’ll probably appoint Gats, Lancaster, ROG, and Vern Cotter to work with him - Home Nations bingo.
-
Where does the idea for a Schmidt/Gatland combo come from? Have they worked together before or shown admiration for each other in the past?
The worry with appointing overqualified assistants, which Gats would be, is the risk of ego clashes, being headhunted overseas mid-cycle and whiteanting for the head spot. I put none of those three past Gatland (or many in his position to be honest - Wayne Smith was a bit of a saint in that regard).

I couldn't find a better thread to post this, but this might be interesting for people who don't mind making a trip to Hastings on 5. April and would like to hear Joe Schmidt speak.
Hawke’s Bay Rugby are delighted to announce that current Ireland and IRB World Rugby coach of the year Joe Schmidt will be the guest speaker at the HBRU’s “An Evening with Joe Schmidt” event to be held in the Exhibition Hall at the A&P Showgrounds in Hastings on Friday 5th April starting from 6pm. (...)
It's a charity event and it's not cheap.
