Highlanders vs. Hurricanes

But this year the backs have been ordinary relying on individual brilliance rather than great team tries. I put it down to poor coaching. Is it Boyd to blame or the attack coach? I hope they can sort things out but I don't have high hopes.
Sounds like the All Blacks last year. Wonder what the common denominator is?

I have the opposite impression of the Canes this year. The backs have been awesome and scored some bloody incredible length of the field tries going through lots of hands. It's the forwards that have been exposed, and badly at times - see Sharks and latest Crusaders games.
Edit - would also add, just to rebut what I think @mariner4life's implied point is, that the backs have only been awesome when Beauden is on the field. We've struggled badly without him.
-
@no-quarter That's what it looks like to me too.

Well, it does rebut his point somewhat.
It doesn't rebut the original post though. If you're dependent on one player, then you're dependent on individual brilliance.
A well-performing backline should be able to function with a player missing.
-
@chester-draws that's all relative to the hand brake that fills in for the brilliant individual.
-
@toddy I don't think it does.
Clearing kicks, goal kicking etc may well fall apart when the First-5 is not much chop, but if the outside backs are any good they should still function. The Canes ones are not that green, nor new combinations.
I can't think of other sides that have the same drop-off, and some of them have more pedestrian back-ups -- especially given that West's strength is his attacking play.

Looking forward to see how we go on a dry track after last weeks poor performance.

is "dry" like "flat"?
