All Blacks Squad for France

The poaching thing used to annoy me as we were trolled when we weren't actually doing any poaching, instead Polynesian-New Zealanders were country swapping.
Now we are actually doing it, so I'm chilled. Nothing to actually be annoyed about now. I expect plenty more, been a trend of about 1 every 2 years for the last decade.

@nepia They are looking for a Collins/Kaino type defender in the loose forwards it seems. That's not really Akira - he uses his strength to hold up or pull others down. I'm not convinced you can 'learn' it either - you either have it or you don't.
I dunno... The last year or slightly more has shown a huge improvement in Whitelocks ability to boss the tackle. If he can learn it, surely Ioane can. Plus I don't recall it being something in Kainos arsenal until he'd been around a few years.

Kaino certainly took three or four years to really show his potential. IMO absolute peak when 28.

It wouldn't be so bad if Frizell had made more of an impression for the Highlanders, but aside from that try scoring game, and his unimpressive cameo on the weekend, I barely remember him being on the field. He must be putting in some big hits on the training field.

@stargazer Do the Chiefs have a dodgy mo 'thing' going at the moment?
They had them for the SA tour. DMac might need more time though.

I'm annoyed about it, especially with guys who come here as adults. At least Naholo, Tamanivalu etc came for schooling. Tamanivalu's international career is over, yet if not selected for the ABs he could be starting for Fiji while earning the big coin in France.

Squad
Strange that Coltman is wearing a jersey with the rest there but Akira isn't. Is Coltman capped already?

@KiwiMurph the way they talk about Frizell you'd think he was good enough to hold down a starting spot at the Landers. Mauger must have a blind spot...
Highlanders have some good loosies, Squire and Dixon etc. I don't have an issue with Frizell being picked on potential - he looked bloody good against the Blues when he scored a hat trick - certainly looked to have something special. My main issue is he is a blatant poach and should be playing for Tonga.
Pick him this squad so he is ours, then drop him , pick Akira in the next squad ?
Is that how it works .

@kiwimurph what about 05, 06, 07? 😊

If I hear another rugby player talk about "us challenging ourselves" I am going to vomit.
It could be worse. They could be going on a 'journey'
That requires a pact.
That will
workresonate if there is a, like, buy-in by everyone. But. -

I thought this was a nice summary of things on Frizell vs Akira from Hansen that not everyone might have seen or heard.
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=12056403
But ultimately it's Frizzell's desire on the field that they like the most. When he has played for the Highlanders, he's made himself visible and high impact. "We have noticed him all season really," says Hansen. 'He fits the mould of players that the All Blacks have used in the past. He's very assertive, he's got plenty of energy and he carries well. He's got the right intentions when he's got the ball and he's got the right intentions when he's not got the ball. "And the reason why we picked him and not Akira [Ioane] is because his intentions without the ball are really strong. He's physical, he wants to make big tackles. He wants to put himself about the park and intimidate people in a positive way and that is what we have to grow in Akira. "When Akira has ball in hand he's world class. But the rest of what we need him to do is in the learning process but that's okay because he's only 22. He's a young man and he'll get there."
So Frizell is more assertive off the ball in his 34 minutes per game than Akira in his 80 minutes ... I guess that's a summary.
So the problem is Akira’s workrate?
.... who would have thought

Or Tana should just play him for 34 minutes a match?

Just watched the Breakdown on Sky. Jeff Wilson had a very interesting interview with Steve Hansen after the squad announcement, which included the way he watched players during the SR season and, basically, the criteria that he ticked off and that played a big role in the selection process.
It was not only about the specific qualities of a player, but how well the player used them in a game, and whether he could repeat that over and over again; and whether he could use them in a high pressure game. And are those qualities something that add something to the team that it is lacking or could use more of etc.
A lot more was discussed during that interview. I'd recommend watching a replay of the Breakdown if you haven't seen it.
