    http://www.netballnz.co.nz/news/detail/netball-new-zealand-announces-review-findings

Here's the link to the summary of the review.

It's only four pages and quite interesting - especially the paragraph (6) describing the culture Southby tried to implement, which sounds good in theory; the broader observations about high performance culture; and what NNZ proposes to do to address the shortcomings.

@chris-b that reads like quite a sanitised summary. Certainly not much sniff of a player v coach divide, aside from the points about a player-centric focus not working for a largely junior squad. But probably not much value in explicitly stating that when you can read between the lines.

@paekakboyz They do note that the group "fractured" and paras 8 & 10 are fairly to the point in that regard.

Language in these sorts of reviews are usually pretty dispassionate and usually avoids unconstructive personal criticism, so it's not really surprising.

I guess, the point is to work out what went wrong and how to fix it rather than hanging people (Southby) out to dry.

Sounds like the team wanted stronger leadership and direction from the coach

Just as well Southby realised the gig was up, even if it took a while... Another classic "interviewed well" gone wrong - not a phenomenon unique to sports!

Reading the article, I get the impression that while Southby wasn't ready yet, the Board and players need to take a long, hard look at themselves.

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/netball/105662398/no-silver-bullet-for-silver-ferns-after-two-years-of-wrong-turns-by-netball-nz

This provides some commentary on the report, but to me, the most telling quote from the report I came across is "Netball in New Zealand continues to struggle to embrace a true high performance culture - the no compromises, no shortcuts philosophy so much a part of many elite sports in not yet ingrained deeply enough within netball in New Zealand". To make matters worse, the chair from 2008 said that a review back then identified a similar issue.

Might be time for more players to stop making excuses and step up.

So the coach was doing a great job, allowing the players to lead, but the assistant acknowledges they knew the playing group lacked experience..... 🤔 so why then are we here? 🙄

@canefan That strategy might have worked well when they had Casey and Laura and Irene etc, but this squad didn't have that calibre of player or leader. I actually felt sorry for Maria in the shooting circle, having to be GS and GA because that other chick couldn't hit the side of a barn. The midcourt was a shambles too, way too often we would get a turnover in the opposition goal circle, only for it to be fucked up in the centre third.

Exactly. The coach has to recognize what she has to work with, not use an approach she learned and uses as a one size fits all

Casey said she wouldn't be coming back if Southby was still in charge. No doubt that Taurua's pending appointment was the catalyst for the return of Kopua and Langman.

My understanding was that it was a netball NZ rule that kept Langman out due to her playing in Australia. The last tenure has been a humbling experience and perhaps Taurua has insisted the rule be squashed

CEO Jennie Wyllie said that Langman has been given an exemption. The talent pool is too small to ignore one of your best players.

I wonder if it is possible for NZ to play their domestic comp at a different time of the year to the Aussies? That way, for the ones that are good enough, NZers could get a contract in Aus and still be able to play the local NZ comp.

The Silver Ferns need as many players as possible exposed to the Aussie comp. I fear NZ is falling behind more every year.

@bovidae could be the review highlighted how stupid and knobbling the rule was to the Ferns. Would we still be looking for a new coach if JS had LL playing and they'd managed to finish with a bronze medal? Probably not. JS is the scapegoat for NNZs stubborn attitude.

Langman moved back to NZ a couple of mths ago breaking the last year of her Oz contract. This is therefore more of a tweaking of the rule rather than a total abandonment. She didn't play the just completed season but is available for a local side going forward whereas previously she wasn't

@northlandallday Nah, Southby is shit but the NNZ board that appointed her need to take responsibility. Ironically two of them are no longer involved with NNZ.

@bovidae I'm not saying Southby isn't shit but if she had LL in the mix like then they wouldn't have finished or played so glaringly badly.

reading between the lines it looks like kapua didnt want to be involved with southby. Southby biggest problem she let one player dominate and never/couldnt pull her into line. That player is still in team but i wouldnt expect Taurua /Langman/Kapua to let this continue .

Don't be cryptic, just tell us the player.
