@stargazer certainly wouldn't be averse to seeing Laumape/Crotty. Thompson into 13 when Crotty gets injured.
Laumape/Crotty is as similar to Nonu/Smith as you could wish for
-
@kiwiinmelb I'd tend to disagree quite strongly there - Laumape is not even close to the player Nonu is - he's brutal, but the things that put Nonu above his peers (superb vision, deft passing, brilliant decisions), don't really feature in his arsenal. I can see him developing these assets though from the huge improvement he's shown in the last 2 years.

I’d say Laumape/Goodhue is more similar

I can only see them picking four midfielders, but if everyone is fit they've got five obvious options to choose from - SBW, Crotty, Laumape, ALB and Goodhue. Someone is probably going to miss out.
Same at the back - probably only select five players, but plenty of options BFA, Jordie, Rieko, Dagg, Naholo, NMS, Lam, Duffie, Havili.

Mid-field is tougher, all quality players, SBW, Crotty encumbants, the latter always broken, SBW currently...Goodhue still green AF, but plays like he isnt, LAumape only slightly less green...ALB not really at the peaks from his breakout season.
-
@taniwharugby Interesting choice of Havili, because I think he's an outsider. They'll have DMac as one of the first fives so with BFA and Jordie as the top fullback options, I think David will be surplus to requirements.
If Israel hits his straps, I think he'll be the fifth choice, but they could pick Lam as a squaddie - he has really hit his straps this year - and use BFA on the wing. There's some really interesting combo options in the back three depending on what they want to bring, but I reckon there will be a temptation to play Rieko, Ben, Jordie as the top combo.

Why do you consider Havilli an easy pick of that lot? He only made the ABs due to injuries and has played 3 tests.
-
I think he sits above NMS who is a long way from teh player we saw in 2015, lost alot of pace...Duffie is way out of form, Lam is in good form, but I feel he is competing with Naholo for the power winger spot, and we know the selectors love Naholo.
Havilli is a FB/wing, which they like, he has looked the goods in his 3 tests...I think Havilis selection hinges on Daggs form, if Dagg is in form, we know they will go to him, which means the 'swing spot' that Havilli fills, Dagg takes.
BFA, Ioane, Naholo, JB are 4 dead certs IMO, it's that 5th spot that is the interesting one that I feel right, Havili takes.
-
@taniwharugby Although I doubt they'll pick Havili, he can cover 12 as well (which Hansen said he liked about him, last year), but more importantly, he's one of the better defenders of that lot.

Oh God please not DMac at 10 for the ABs, even as a sub. He's not a 10s asshole at the moment. With Sops leaving the order should be Beauden -> Mo'unga -> Jordie.
-
@kiwimurph Not sure how you can say that, considering he has hardly played at 12 for the Crusaders in recent years. It seems that people who say that, only base their judgment on that one game against the B&I Lions, in which he had to replace Crotty. His only other games for the Crusaders in which he had to play at 12 were when he replaced Crotty in 2016 (5 times) and had to form a combo with Fonotia. He also played at 12 when forming a combo with Crotty (playing at 13; 3 times at the end of the 2016 season). He's also been good at 12 for Ta$man.
I definitely prefer Havili at 15; but it's a bonus that he can cover 12 and Hansen seems to think so as well.

I was thinking more early Nonu , the raw nonu , and seeing the similarities at a similar stage

What suggests that Jordie is a 10s asshole when he hasn't played a match there?

It's pretty obvious he has the required attributes to go well at 10 or 12, but the most important one is a bit of bloody composure under pressure, which is why he was able to slot in against the Lions. DMac is erratic in everything he does, regardless of where he plays in the backline. Putting him at 10 is madness.
The cupboard is bare at the moment past Mo'unga (who also has no test experience). If Beauden goes down then the ABs are in a bit of trouble.
