Commonwealth Games - Rugby Sevens

IIRC all of the 15s players that wanted to play 7s at the Olympics had to spend a year reconditioning themselves and getting used to 7s or else they would be largely ineffectual. Turned out some (like SBW) were just that despite their best efforts.
Not sure if YRC?
SBW made the team, but got injured in the pool play. The Ioane bros and Pulu also made the squad.
Ardie dropped out when his AB aspirations appeared.
Messam tried but didn't make the squad.

Why would you kick the ball out. But okay. Extra time.
Kinda fell sorr ... oh no fuck it no I don't

@no-quarter said in Commonwealth Games - Rugby Sevens:
It's likely that if you put that 7s team up against the best 15s players in a match tomorrow the 7s team would win.
There is virtually no doubt about that.
But, if you give me and Wayne Smith our choice of twenty All Black/Super rugby players to train for a year, then I'll bet big money we'll beat the current team.

Not counting on the men getting the same result, but they've already come further than I expected.
Just hoping they're not giving it away to Fiji.Oh ye of little faith

@stargazer said in Commonwealth Games - Rugby Sevens:
@chris-b And we all know how that tournament ended. The only good XVs players in that squad were the Ioane's. SBW was very average in the World Series tournaments he played, and so were Ardie and Messam.
I guess that's a matter for Titch's decisions.
The obvious point is that the best rugby players in NZ choose to play XVs. The Sevens get the leftovers. Yes - in the short run those guys become the best Sevens players, but I am amazed if anyone is thinking this is the best team we could possibly develop.
And if they're not arguing that, why are they wasting my time.

Awesome..!,if you have asked me at the beginning of the day on our chances of both teams,I would have said our ladies were about a 95% chance and our men with this squad, maybe 65% or 70%..great double..!
Gee you're an optimist.
I'd gave said 50/50 and about 20%

Really?
You're certainly a glass half full person SH. The Blues must be a constant disappointment to you.
I would have said Women 40%. Men 20%.
Ha. Pessimist

Gee Fiji were utter shit. Good for us for them to bring that in the gold medal game.
Not a big fan of 7s, particularly without the top players, but I enjoyed that.
What top players were missing?
You're kidding right?
What? I can't think of the top players missing, that's not far off our strongest squad.
Ahem. How about the Super roster? The major European club comps. That's what I meant by top players. I totally recognise they are different games that require different skill sets, but unfortunately the best rugby players on the planet are not there.
There's a super roster of Sevens players? Major European club comp for Sevens? Gee I had no idea they were hogging all those players. That's a shame for the commonwealth games.
You know what I'm talking about. Don't be an idiot.
Oh so you're talking about good XVs players when discussing Sevens players. Makes perfect sense. Yes must be me being an idiot huh...
Cmon Bones, don't be a tool. I was merely saying that it's unfortunate that the best rugby players on the planet aren't there. I acknowledge this isn't possible these days and that the games are very different. You think all the same players would be there if the 15s players had the same training and build up?
How about you quit with the usual name calling just because you can't understand something simple? Seems to be a very common occurrence.
The best Sevens players ARE there. Tell me the better Sevens players that are missing.

Even if you included XVs players then Damien McKenzie and Rieko Ioane would probably be the only certainties.
What?
There's no-one in that sevens squad who is in the top 150 rugby players in NZ.
Trael Joass isn't a first choice starter for the Mako$ and Knewstubb doesn't even make last season's squad.
What you've just said makes no sense at all... Unless you're talking about the Mako$ Sevens squad.
Seriously - you think Knewstubb is making the NZ Sevens team if Beauden Barrett decides to focus on sevens?
Joass is pushing out SBW?
But he is not

dont care if this has been posted....
I'm MORE than happy to watch it again... and again.. and again....
-
@taniwharugby That is a great sporting moment, IMO, particularly with the drama involved, and will see a lot of replays.

XVs and 7s are not fishing in entirely the same pool. There are plenty of professional XVs players, who would never be good enough for higher level sevens.
