@stargazer And some ferners were worried about the scrum during the Oceania tournament. It was the same last year, scrum struggled against Australia only to come right during the championship
I think Lose said at the start of Comms that Welsh scrum dominated Aus in round 1?
So April NZ scrum getting pantsed by Aus, then Welsh dominate Aus, then NZ dominated Welsh.
It's amazing how quickly they can get them up to speed. They obviously put emphasis on it in camp after the 2016 debacle. It's a wonder how they even select the props, they're only 2 years out of schoolboys scrum rules.

@rapido there have been a few pens at higher levels for a player jumping to catch a pass and the defender getting him in the air. .
Think they need to look at this area otherwise you add jumping to take a pass and ducking into tackles as ways to draw penalties from these parts of the game.

One of the baby Blacks got red carded in the Oceania U20s for tackling a Fijian jumping to catch a pass. He got tipped as his shins hit the tacklers chest.
It's a lottery. I don't doubt that we got lucky on that one this morning as it's all a shambles.

So he has been yc for no use of arms yet the Welsh comma is going on about a swinging arm...very unlucky for Florence, but I do like the look of this ref though

Have already seen a lot of Welsh moaning about the referee on social media. This is one example. Obviously, it's one-sided moaning, but if Faingaanuku wasn't penalised (I can't remember), they may have a point in this instance.
They don't have a point because that is the NZU20s not the All Blacks. How exactly do we manage to exert this mystical power - must be terrified that Jacinda is going to order airstrikes with our barely existent airforce?
I would have given Leicester a yellow for that, though.

They don't have a point. If the ball has already hit the ground and then you decide to jump for it, you've placed yourself at the mercy of events. How is a defender supposed to know you're going to reenact a Baryshnikov leap?
-
As I said, I thought this ref was very good, controlled things well, communicated well and didnt get excited, rush or over react to things (a couple of more senior French refs could take note)
Welsh defence was largely very good, in patches it was outstanding.

Philpott made eight changes to the side that beat Japan and was forced into a ninth when left winger Caleb Clarke was a late withdrawal with a virus. He was replaced by Leicester Faingaanuku. "Our jobs not done yet. We want to make sure we finish top of our pool with an opportunity to play in a semifinal the following week," Philpott said. He expects Clarke to be fit for the match.

Must have been close to our best XV today. Shame that the conditions forced our game-plan more to position and pressure than possession. Box-kicks from halfback and tighties pounding it upfield worked very well, but we haven't seen the best of Plummer and the loosies yet I feel. Hope we can see more creativity from the inside backs and continuity between backs and forwards out wide. Would like to see Trask involved more.
This team does seem well equipped to play any type of game dictated by conditions or opposition, with some bruisers we lacked in previous years. Looking forward to the rest of the tournament!

We invented con-trails ... the Fletcher topdresser...

@stargazer he wasn't penalised and rightly so. Nobody told the Welsh player to jump for no reason
True.
But if that's what passes for a tackle in NZ then heaven help us
-
@mikethesnow heaven help us if players start jumping to catch a pass and draw penalties...
-
@mikethesnow it wasn't a tackle but competition for the ball. It really is a grey area that was highlighted during the recent Lions tour. It might be cynical of me but I'm sure this would've been clarified by now had it been Faumuina who had jumped for the ball when he didn't have to.

delightfully pissy and dramatic
