Hurricanes 2018

It seems they couldn't find a single Hawke's Bay player for this team. Part of the reason is that several players from last year's Dev and U20s teams are now with the senior team (Lowe is in South Africa), have moved to another franchise (Falcon/Chiefs, Mikaele-Tu'u/Highlanders) or are injured (Geoff Cridge, Tim Farrell). I did, however, expect Pouri Rakete-Stones in this squad. I guess Jacob Devery still qualfies for the Canes U20s.
Hugh Renton has moved to Christchurch recently, so it will be interesting to see whether he'll appear in future Crusader Knights games.

@Nepia will have kittens when he sees that first sentence.

I have a feeling he was really the man behind the team the entire time, whenever you hear an interview with a player they always talk about him, and never mention Boyd.
Boyd coached the Wellington ITM team to a last place finish the season prior to him taking on the canes IIRC. So at the least I see Plumtree having a major role in our success. He is an experienced head coach at super level having coached the Sharks too

Official announcement:
JOHN PLUMTREE TO COACH HURRICANES 2019 - 2021 JASON HOLLAND TO JOIN AS ASSISTANT COACH
The Hurricanes and New Zealand Rugby have today announced that John Plumtree will take the Head Coach role for the 2019 Investec Super Rugby season. Plumtree will take over from Chris Boyd after the 2018 season with Jason Holland confirmed as his Assistant Coach with both contracted for three years.
Plumtree will bring a wealth of experience to the job with a coaching career that spans more than two decades. Having started with Sawnsea in 1997, Plumtree moved to New Zealand where he enjoyed a successful tenure with Wellington. He then moved to South Africa where he was in charge at Natal before accepting a role as forwards coach with Ireland. The chance to return to New Zealand proved too much for Plumtree, however, who returned to Wellington to partner Boyd at the Hurricanes in 2015 .

JTA is a notable inclusion in that team; must be close to returning to full fitness for the main squad, and therefore the ABs.
Glad to see Pouri Rakete-Stones made bench. I hope Jonah Lowe has a blinder. With Lam playing well last week, it's become even harder for him to get picked, so this might be his only opportunity to shine - just like he did during preseason.

Just came back from the Hurricanes Dev game. The Hurricanes beat Blues "A" convincingly, 40 to 19.
The Canes dominated most of the game, and had most possession and territory, except for the last 15 minutes of the first half. Although they gave away a lot of unnecessary penalties, they were clearly the better team, both on attack and defence. One big exception was the scrum, where the Blues had the upperhand.
Not going to write a whole report and name a lot of names, because I forgot my glasses and couldn't always see who was who, nor did I recognise all players (and not every number on the jersey corresponded to the name on the team list), but stand-outs for me were whoever was playing in the Canes no. 5 jersey (it wasn't Michael Fatialofa), Ihaia West, Reed Prinsep, Du'Plessis Kirifi and Tiatia for the Canes. JTA was very vocal and really took a leadership role. He played about 25 minutes. Aumua, I think, only played the first half (it was hard to tell with the rolling subs). Both Canes halfbacks played well; I like the ginger combo of Booth and West.
I recognised fewer Blues players, but Leger was busy but couldn't quite get his job done and Clarke didn't get the ball enough to make any impression. I think Pryor played only the first half for the Blues and was very keen to get his hands on the ball. Moulds and Matich played about 60 minutes. Trainor was meh.
Worst news, especially for us Bay fans, was that Jonah Lowe left the field injured after about half an hour. He sat the rest of the game, including the break, on the bench and the team doc was busy with his foot (or ankle?) for at least 15-20 minutes. After the game he was wearing a moonboot. I hope it's not a broken foot again.
Canes 40 (tries to Tiatia?, JGB (all work done by the outside backs though), a back?, West, Judd and Proctor??; conversions West 4x)
Blues 19 (tries to 4 or 6, ?? and one quick back (not Trainor or Gregory) - that was an intercept try in the 80th minute; conversions Plummer 2x)
(HT: 14-7)
I'm sure the Canes or Blues will come up with a better report of the game.
