Had the Panhead XPA and the Panhead APA over the weekend and was impressed with both.
It was refreshing to note that even with the explosion in craft brewing, all Steinlager is still crap.
I had some other APA on Friday that we were pumping by the jug, and it was pretty good, but i was way too pissed to remember what it was called.
I still don't really like Carona, but a bucket of Carona in the sun does have it's place.

Panhead are taking over the world and it's great to see. Garage Project have cool cans and about 50,000 different selections ( I had one that tasted like Thai chicken curry, seriously ) but Panhead do Craft Beer simple ( relatively speaking ) and it fucken kicks ass.
Their APA is just superb, I'm yet to find a better one.
During Wellys freakish heatwave I definitely liked a cold corona with lemon and given my stepsons are at that 'pinching beer from the fridge and hoping I don't notice' stage it's cost effective too.

Well, a weekend of watching superstock teams racing with Panhead XPA before, between and afterwards.

In the 5 weeks I spent in Invers over Xmas/New Years I made a point of trying the rest of the Invercargill Brewery range not readily available up north.
This included:
- WASP Honey Pilsner (very tasty)
- WASP Lager
- b.man NZ IPA
- b.man Strong NZ Pilsner
- Stanley Green Pale Ale
I also found some Panhead Port Road Pils (another good one), Liberty Halo Pilsner and an assorted 6 pack of 8 Wired (Tropidelic, Hippy Berliner, Hopwired, Semi Conductor, Tall Poppy and Flat White) in the local liquor outlet.
Oh, and the obligatory Cardrona ale at the Cardrona Hotel.

Epic is another that is pretty consistent...
That said, Epic Hysteria, very hoppy and a bit strong for my liking at 6.9%
Also had the Epic Awakening Pils which has a clean crisp taste to it, 5.2%

Sad news that Invercargill Brewery has gone into receivership. Nally was one of the best brewers going and they were the contract brewery for Yeastie Boys (among others) for years. When YBs moved on to a world domination attempt the contract ended and IB decided that they would give it a shot being more than just a brewery, setting up premises for entertainment etc. Looks like it didn't work out quick enough which is sad. Pity they didn't try and crowdfund their way out of trouble but, as the article says, generally the business is set up well, it was the bank/finance company calling in debt after a default. They probably thought they could work through what they saw as temporary problems.

Agreed. A real pity, adn they were originals and stalwarts in teh industry.

Distribution is the killer problem these days. How the hell do you differentiate yourself from the rest -- it's bloody hard. I don't want to brew professionally, but if I did, I reckon a combined beer/food place would be the shot. Mcleods/pizza barn in Waipu, the Sawmill in Leigh and Deep Creek/Deep Creek are the kind of examples. Takes serious money, but once you're rolling, you just sell on the premises -- no distributors to deal with.

Hence the reason why some sell shareholdings to multinationals like Emersons, Tuatara and Panhead. The distribution logistics and access to selling points is dealt with easily.
IB was never a big player on their own beers, you hardly ever saw them. They were good brewers though and supported themselves with contract brews.

@nzzp although Pizza Barn in Waipu was an established eatery well before McLeods (I believe the McLeods guys had owned it for a while prior to starting the Brewing too)
I was at Sawmill a few weeks back, great set up, only had 'nibbles' rather than a proper meal, but what they bought out was very good, oh then the beer too

Birkenhead Brewing Company https://www.birkenheadbrewingcompany.com/ is a different example - small site (basically top floor of a villa) runs on 3 staff (including kitchen) 4 house beers - 4 guest but does it really well. Linked up with Ninkasi from the States early on
Also principals all have other jobs one of whom is in marketing so they were exporting almost from Day 1
Nice drops too if you can get hold of them

Yeah. I also like Beerspot. 40 taps, no food, no fitout except a few chairs, and they just get food trucks in to serve. It's a great business model - low overheads, low risk.
