Sad news that Invercargill Brewery has gone into receivership. Nally was one of the best brewers going

Agreed. A real pity, adn they were originals and stalwarts in teh industry.

Another reminder to stick to your knitting perhaps?

I went there for the first time last Dec. A lot of these craft breweries expand too quickly and open up cafes/restaurants to complement the brewery and risk a shortfall in working capital. IB did not do that so this is a surprise.

Distribution is the killer problem these days. How the hell do you differentiate yourself from the rest -- it's bloody hard. I don't want to brew professionally, but if I did, I reckon a combined beer/food place would be the shot. Mcleods/pizza barn in Waipu, the Sawmill in Leigh and Deep Creek/Deep Creek are the kind of examples. Takes serious money, but once you're rolling, you just sell on the premises -- no distributors to deal with.

Yes, Good George in the Waikato is another example, and is expanding all the time.

Southland is unique with ILT and the restrictions on where you can buy and offer beers on tap. It was strange going into a liquor store again.

Hence the reason why some sell shareholdings to multinationals like Emersons, Tuatara and Panhead. The distribution logistics and access to selling points is dealt with easily.

IB was never a big player on their own beers, you hardly ever saw them. They were good brewers though and supported themselves with contract brews.

@nzzp although Pizza Barn in Waipu was an established eatery well before McLeods (I believe the McLeods guys had owned it for a while prior to starting the Brewing too)

I was at Sawmill a few weeks back, great set up, only had 'nibbles' rather than a proper meal, but what they bought out was very good, oh then the beer too 🙂

Birkenhead Brewing Company https://www.birkenheadbrewingcompany.com/ is a different example - small site (basically top floor of a villa) runs on 3 staff (including kitchen) 4 house beers - 4 guest but does it really well. Linked up with Ninkasi from the States early on

Also principals all have other jobs one of whom is in marketing so they were exporting almost from Day 1

Nice drops too if you can get hold of them

Yeah. I also like Beerspot. 40 taps, no food, no fitout except a few chairs, and they just get food trucks in to serve. It's a great business model - low overheads, low risk.

@nzzp Beerspot is a great set-up and just voted one of the top 40 bars in Akl by Metro but I didn't reference them as not a brewery but yeah they too take a sizeable sum off me over the course of a year.

However BBC is 7 minutes walk away (all downhill on the way back) whereas Beerspot is 4 kms - the last 2 all uphill. Important considerations when drinking if you're an old bastard like me

Yep. Not a brewery, but arguably a better model as all yo uhave to do is drink the profits and quality control 40 different beers 🙂 Also, lots of good food trucks... outstanding.

if you're in that neck of the woods, head down to El Humero in Takapuna and eat their short rib. I venture from civilisation over the bridge to eat it. It's that good.

McLeod's Paradise Pale Ale named Soba's Beer of the Year for 2017 ahead two-time reigning champion, Panhead Supercharger.

A pity none of us south of the Bombays have likely ever tried it.

Just had a couple of beers with erstwhile poster FCC at Akasha in Five Dock in Sydney. Probably my favourite craft brewery.

@bovidae That's great news for McLeod's, but I can't say I care much for that particular beer.

They've done some really nice brews though, especially the one with the trial hop from NZ Plant & Food.

Must be a hell of a drop to beat Panhead APA!
