Pretty predictable squad overall. Not even the biggest Jules fluffer (I.E. me) could justify his place, his form and confidence have fallen off a cliff to the point that he is a liability.
I rate Jordie as a better first-five option at test level than Mo'unga and DMac so not surprised that's what they've gone with - the kid has big game temperament no doubt about it.
I agree with both points. I didn't expect Jules to make the squad, but I am surprised NMS was picked ahead of him..
Hansen was pretty keen to get Skud back in there as soon as possible.
If anything it was probably Jordie Barrett that has kept Savea from being selected - and his form of course.

well, what a huge number of surprises...
So we are effectively blaming Savea for fucking up the Lions series? No accountability
-
So Jordie not seen as a cover for 10.
DMac as utility cover, mainly to cover for Bender, but who can cover 10 if necessary. For now, two first-fives are enough and they to intend to develop a third first-five over the next few years; they are also looking at Mo'unga.
Goodhue is in the queue, and more seen as someone for the future.
Great to see Moli as apprentice.

If we're talking about accountability then SBW should be nowhere near this squad.
-
@No-Quarter agreed. Couple of others that would get me lynched on here as well.

Well if he caught the sitter of a pass from Jordie with the line open...

look, don't mistake my pithy comment for some fort of defense, i am quite comfortable with his omission. I just think a couple of guys got a bit found out, and new options should be looked at.

Still don't know what they see in Fifita. Surely Akira has impressed a lot more this year. Lima can consider himself lucky as well, he's done fark all this year.
Akira is on the radar but just needs to continue to improve - he's heading in the right direction just needs to keep at it. As a 6/8 he's really competing with Kaino and Squire for a spot.
Agreed on Lima - his form this year is nowhere near what it was in 2015. Some more consistent game time in black might help though.

Who? Go on, I know you wanna say it.

@KiwiMurph I think Lima is mainly there because they haven't made a choice for a third 10 yet and he needs more game time in black.
What I find strange is that they say they will develop that third over the next few years. By the end of the RC, we're half way through to the 2019 RWC. Wouldn't it be wise to have that third 10 ready to go and have several tests under their belt (as a 10) before the RWC? Just thinking of what happened in 2011. All the replacements of Carter had reasonable or plenty of test experience.
I'd rather see Mo'unga (Dmac is already there, even though not as a 10) in the frame sooner rather than later. I hope they take him as an apprentice on the EOYT if he has a good Mitre 10 Cup season. I just can't see how two first-fives is enough except in the very short term.

Hanson on Todd: "The other guy who always seems to be unlucky not to get named is Matty Todd; he's an outstanding rugby player, (but) unfortunately we can only fit two openside flankers into the squad. Again, I think, we can see him before the year's out in the jersey ...."
Looks like he's hinting at Todd likely to be in the EOYT squad?

Yeah he'll be there on the EOYT because aren't we playing some midweek stuff as well as the tests?
On the 10's, I'm glad there was no DMac, Mo'unga or any other option that really isn't an option. Just play the two front liners that we have.
I wouldn't be surprised if B. Barrett plays 80 minutes in most if not all the tests at 10 throughout the RC.

Happiest player out there has got to be Doug Howlett.

all good mariner, Cruden is gone

@Stargazer Oh yes I would absolutely have Lima in the squad - what I mean by 'lucky' is he was playing much better rugby in 2015 but due to other players he couldnt crack the RWC squad. In 2017 he's playing worse rugby but is locked in as number 2 due to the other options right now.
I agree it's a bit weird with the approach to the third first five I think what Hansen meant with that comment is that there are a few options for the 3rd 10 and they are yet to commit to one (Mounga, Dmac, Otere, Jordie etc). In their various opportunities vs the British and Irish Lions at 10, none of Mounga, DMac or Otere really stamped their mark - they were all quite poor in varying ways.

He could have owned that record by a mile if he chose to stay around. Classy, quality winger.
ALso amazed at how quickly wingers disappear. Any dominant wingers for the ABs (in the professional era) that were amazing after 26/27?
-
@KiwiMurph I wouldn't give too much importance to the performance of the young lads against the B&I Lions, esp not Mo'unga (the only one to play against a test strength Lions team). It was a one off game without sufficient preparation at the required level.
I hope Mo'unga will be the apprentice on the EOYT (but not counting on it). Don't see Black anywhere near the ABs (hasn't shown anything in SR yet that warrants any expectation in that respect), and IMO DMac will never be more than an utitlity; and they're not even considering Jordie as a 10 at the moment. He doesn't see himself as a 10 either; he prefers 12 (that's what he's said in interviews). Mo'unga at this stage is IMO by far the best option for a future third 10 and I think they should start developing him sooner rather than later (for the reasons in my previous post). EOYT is a good time to bring him in to train with them, so they can have a close look at him, assess what his weak spots are and what he needs to work on most during the 2018 SR season. I'm not talking about giving him game time (obviously).

Agree with what you are saying if that is the reason ,
Im guessing it may go a little deeper though , like they have given him work ons and he is falling short .
