All Blacks v BI Lions Test #3

Another thing under Ritchies reign was that the team would always stay composed in that pressure situation (The learnings from 2007 apparently)
It looks as though if we aren't smashing a team we are in panick mode a bit.
I thought the ABs by and large composed themselves pretty well right after that 'accidental' offside incident. So much so that we dominated the Lions scrum and provided an excellent platform to attack from. However Perenara thought being a traffic cop was better than being a halfback ready to take advantage...
Some moments in a test are bigger than others because of the context in which they happen - and whilst our pack stepped up, unfortunately our halfback didn't and we lost possession and field position.
In terms of captaincy and lacking composure etc, not sure. But the two previous full-time AB captains have had their teething issues early on. I remember after the loss at Ellis Park in 04 that people were questioning Tana's play and captaincy. Richie in 2007 after a season and a half as captain. Mind you both of those captains had plenty of experience around them, as does Read.

@ACT-Crusader yeah TJP seems to have regressed considerably this year (for the ABs) unlike last year you wanted him to replace SMith, this year you want Smith to stay on!

I know it might seem that I'm making a run for TSF broken record award (although I've got a ways to go to oust gollum and the US politics thread), I watched the accidental offside thing about five times last night, so I got see the scrum thereafter five times. Still baffles me to think we lost the ball from a scrum going forwards and a Lions player was able to get it.

That picture sums it up nicely... unless he thinks the rugby ball has suddenly eaten all the pies, he's not going to hold one that way.
-
how about fucking no TJ? What the team was trying to do was completely irrelevant to you keeping your mind on the job. Your job is not yelling at the ref, your job is making sure we keep the ball. That's some bullshit lip service right there

Seems weird to single out Gollum and not the other side in that thread, they matched him post for post with quadruple the numbers, and have carried on that way.
Yep, and it seemed to be the exact opposite of the previous scrum where the Lions won the penalty. Still TJ shouldn't have been flapping around and should have played the ball.

Geez, time to take a chill pill for some! All this "TJ is shit" nonsense has now been repeated to death and is becoming boring. He wasn't great, but he also wasn't half as bad as you're saying. Aaron Smith also does the arm waving (and yelling); it just seems to annoy you more when TJ does it. He's easily the 2nd best NZ halfback at the moment, but it will be good to see Brad Weber (once returned to full fitness) challenge him for that spot. Pulu shouldn't be anywhere near the ABs ever again.

No it isn't. He's been permanently banned. Nuff said.
I agree that TJ farked up there, but it seems a trifle harsh to claim he's useless based on that one play. Imho a bigger fark up was Smith launching a close range missile when the abs won that tight head. That should have been an easy 7 points.

@Rancid-Schnitzel He hasn't been permanently banned.
Please no more mentions of that thread in the Sports Forum.

A few odd things from that piece...
1 He thought we were scrumming for a penalty
2 That he didnt know what the play was
3 We may have been scrumming for a penaltyWho's claiming he's useless BTW? Just he seems well off the form he showed last year in black (he still looks good for the 'canes)...
lots of sensitive wee souls on here, guess after the weekends loss it's understandable.

He could be the halfback messiah, but arm flapping and waving at key moments is useless rubbish - whether it's him or Smith or whoever. A halfback is there to clear the ball, not direct traffic down the street...

Other than that play (which I agree was a monumental Barry Crocker) what else has he done that was so bad? It's not like he was even on the field for that long.
-
@Rancid-Schnitzel did you watch the 2nd test?
-
@Stargazer said in All Blacks v BI Lions Test #3:
@Donsteppa My guess is that there are very few halfbacks in the world, who stick to clearing the ball only. Yapping and flapping is their second nature!
Yapping is fine. Flapping arms isn't helping any halfback to do their job... especially when their opposite number is about to pinch the ball. ..

Refresh my memory. That's the one when SBW got sent right?
-
@Rancid-Schnitzel yep...maybe you should go back and watch the arm flapping, yapping and ball watching instead of playing rugby.
It seems he is just trying too hard, lack of focus or something, but certainly hasnt been as sharp.

Just like every scrumhalf in the world....
I just don't see that he has regressed considerably based on this Lions series. A Smith however has thankfully gotten back to speed since his toilet transgressions.
