What the fuck is Lawes playing for?

If he is fit he starts 2nd test.

If not he's on the sideline with concussion.

I reckon they will go for Shouty Clappy starting and Lawes on bench. AWJ having a rest.

    3 Jeff To'omaga-Allen
    4 Mark Abbott
    5 Sam Lousi
    6 Vaea Fifita

    10 Otere Black
    11 Julian Savea
    12 Ngani Laumape
    13 Vince Aso
    14 Nehe Milner-Skudder
    15 Jordie Barrett

    Reserves:
    16 Leni Apisai
    17 Chris Eves
    18 Mike Kainga
    19 James Blackwell
    20 Reed Prinsep
    21 Kemara Hauiti-Parapara
    22 Wes Goosen
    23 Cory Jane

    https://www.hurricanes.co.nz/the-canes/news/single/item/all-black-trio-return-to-bolster-shields-led-hurricanes-against-lions/

Goosen at 22 is a bit odd as he isn't a 10. Will Black go the full eighty minutes, or will they move Jordie to ten if Black gets injured?

Best possible team, I suppose but if Parapara is on the bench, why not try Sosefo Aumua too ?

@booboo do you know if they (anyone other than NZR) operate under the same concussion protocols as us?

As I have mentioned before, we seem (based purely in my rugby fan watcher opinion) to have more players on the sidelines through concussion than anyone else, which makes me wonder if we have better systems in place right now.

Not convinced releasing those players means they are not in the frame for the test. If they play well then I'd say the coaches would be pretty keen to get them on the bench with the confidence boost. None of them were ever in the frame to start.

Cane looked like he needed to have a check on Saturday and didn't come off the park.

    No I don't

But given recent developments I find it hard to believe that a player obviously knocked out twice in two weeks is still playing.

Found this on the World Rugby website:

Individual member Unions are strongly encouraged to develop their own guidelines and policies, and must use this Concussion Guidance as minimum standards.

Realistically only Lawes, Tipuric, North and Nowell playing for 2nd Test squad inclusion.

Best, Stander, Biggar, Joseph last chance for 3rd Test squad.

Cane was concussed several weeks ago, when he had himself taken off despite being able to pass concussion protocols, so you would hope/expect he was aware of what concussion was in this case.

Not being an arse but do you know what your protocols are?

No I don't. All anyone knows is the World Rugby minimum. Beyond that, it's a team by team protocol which may or may not be in the public domain.

If you look up 'oxymoron' in the dictionary one of the meanings is 'aware of concussion'

@MiketheSnow one of the Blues Doctors was on the radio a few weeks back after Piers Francis was knocked out in SA and talked through the process in NZ, the sideline one alone is 10 minutes.

As I said, I only make the comment as we have a lot of players struggling with concussion, so possibly with better systems in place.

Big emphasis on it at Junior level too. A boy in the opposition was suspected of concussion last weekend (issued a 'blue card') ach coach is given a card with the basics, fortunately the St Johns were on hand anyway, and they were still sitting keeping an eye on him and talking with him 15 minutes after the game.

@taniwharugby Getting off-topic, but in Aussie the blue card is being trialled in Canberra and Newcastle; in SA in all SA Rugby youth week tournaments in 2017" and in France they are going to trial it in the Fédérale 1 division and the women's Top 8. So, hopefully, it will spread further and be adopted after all the respective trials.

No excuses for the Canes as only BB, TJP and Ardie are missing. I am ignoring Coles as a longterm absentee.

The Chiefs were really weakened by having no ABs released and the Maori game only 3 days earlier.

There's a few others who'd probably be in a best matchday 23 missing including a few other long term injuries - Proctor, Goodes, Fatialofa, Uhila.

TAB has the Lions at $1.52, Canes at $2.40. Seems about right to me and I'm not tempted by the Canes at that price.

@Chris-B. you'd have to think a few more of the mid-week squad will be in with a shout for the 2nd test too, so a lot to play for.

Similarly, I'd of thought Jordie would be a good bet for a bench spot if Smith doesn't come right, Laumape a bench option too.

@taniwharugby Yeah - plenty for them to play for. Test spots, otherwise for many it will be their last ever game for the Lions. Chance to ensure at worst a 5-5 tour record. And they've had a few games together to get combinations working.

@Chris-B. I was talking about players who could play in the match not those out with injuries.

For the same reason I'm not claiming that the Chiefs were missing Graham and Weber either. The latter was sitting in front of me at the Chiefs-Lions game.

I'm going to this game. Only game of the tour I got tickets for. I'm very very happy that the fringe ABs have been released, that's a pretty good team.

I'd have been gutted if we'd put out a pathetic Chiefs-like team. I didn't really consider that it was midweek between tests when I bought the tickets (which I actually think are good value $wise).

Yes, only those 3 easily replaceable and not at all key players 🙂

I know what you mean, but those 3 plus Coles are probably the most important in the team.

Still, they'll be in a much better condition that the Chiefs were.

Can't see the Canes scrum standing up enough. The Lions have worked how to use it as an exit strategy and point generator. If they can get that going this week, they'll win comfortably. I'm not sure if that Hurricanes 5 (8) can front up. If so, this could be a super fun game to watch. I'm planning to knock off work early anyway 🙂
