The Breakdown (TV Show)

Was really impressed by Chelsea Alley as a speaker at AIMS Games a couple of years ago. Great attitude, and a refreshing degree of individuality - instead of the manufactured polish of some presenters.
Breakdown is ok - but it is not at the level of the Matty Johns show - partly due to covid-19 restrictions. Would love to see a bit more of off the cuff player personalities developed. Angus Ta'avao and Brad Weber could have a future

One thing I can’t stand from the likes of Jeff Wilson and the Breakdown show is this utter dismissal of SR in a RWC year. Sky don’t even have the rights for the RWC (am I right?) and they are pumping it like it’s the be all and end all. We probably know 90% of the players, if not more, who are going if they’re fit.
If you tell the punters the comp doesn’t matter, sooner or later they start to believe you. Look at some of the piss poor crowds.
We know who the next coach is, we know Eddie is in Oz now. Come back to me in July. Too many good old boys drinking the same milk.

The Breakdown needs a re-vamp. It's the same old dross every week, I'm surprised it's still running tbh.
The Aotearoa Rugby Pod is so much better.

I have watched it on Stan here in Australia, I have to agree it is a complete load of dross,I won't bother watching it again.
Stale and patronising is how I would describe it. -

If you remember back the Breakdown tried many formats based on other shows and setups but mostly they fell flat. I'm thinking that once the found one the wasn't cringe-worthy they don't want to try and revamp again.
I think we all agree that there is room for better analysis and less chat/opinion mainly because you know what the hosts are going to say before they open their mouths.
I guess it comes down to $. You would need a team of folk pulling together timely analysis/graphics etc over a short period. Easier just to roll up a talk. -

you need smart, informed poeple saying things worth listening to. The Breakdown is not that. Their audience seems to be people who aren't that interested in rugby, but want to watch ex-players and presenters.
For me, an analysis package for hardcore fans, a fluff package for the casual, and a factual roundup of what happened this week, and what's coming up. Right now we get the second, and some of the third. Get some coaches in there breaking down plays each week, defensive structures, kicking - basically Squidge but qualified. That I would watch, as it would improve my depth of understanding of the game.

So do they. It's too scripted and rehearsed.
My preference would be for a show with scripted analysis segments. Similar to what Preston did during the last RWC for Spark, or 1014
The discussion sections should be more free form and less going down the line and everyone says two sentences that they've preprepared. That might require different experts. JK tries to hard, Mils rarely says anything interesting. The people with the best communication skills may not be the most famous

That's not what is happening. If that were the case there would be natural reaction to what is said and the conversation would flow better. They often mention things like "that's not what you said in rehearsal"

I liked it when they invited Glenn Jackson and Tabai Matson for analysis a few seasons ago. They were good at analysing and explaining things, without the biased tribal bs from the presentators/commentators. That happened only a few times, unfortunately.

I think Breakdown is really only good when they get decent guests like O'Keefe etc on who have something intereting to talk about. As has been mentioned it's become a show where rugby analysis of matches and tactics has seemingly become secondary to the panel becoming cheerleaders for their former teams! Occassionally they will discuss something of interest and use their experience/knowledge of game to make points, but not very often!

i watched my first episode of this show ever this week
Goldie actually made a couple of insightful points about how Super Rugby teams were attacking this year, which got absolutely zero traction, and that segment ended very quickly.
JK just said every Blues player should be in the All Blacks. And the Blues should be favourite for the title. And the Blues... and the Blues...
Mils smiled and nodded and said nothing
The main presenter who i didn't know just teed up golf balls for the others to swing at.
There was the making of an interesting show, but it was missed.

Which is what happens too often, I was like you ,when Goldie tried to bring up about attacking systems etc,, was pissed when it just went nowhere.
I will add why I enjoy Aotearoa Rugby Pod so enjoyable, Parsons and Hall actually discuss how they think teams are playing, and how they are attacking/defending etc, and you feel you learn something while watching it usually. -

I will add why I enjoy Aotearoa Rugby Pod so enjoyable, Parsons and Hall actually discuss how they think teams are playing, and how they are attacking/defending etc, and you feel you learn something while watching it usually.I echo that, the Aotearoa Rugby Pod is a good watch because they actually get into the nitty gritty of each game. The Breakdown is completely inconsistent with their segments.
Guys like Karl Te Nana are so bloody cringe, I’d rather listen to someone like Hall or Parsons any day of the week because they actually know how to analyse the game instead of competing to see who has the biggest mouth.

Yep, and for a win-win, TJ hosts Reunion and is banned from commentating Canterbury, Crusaders, Ta$man and Blues (for the opposite reason) matches.

I guess being on the Fern for 14 years hasn’t helped much with that 😎
