Interesting, he knows what sort of coach he better than any of us but his time at the Chiefs still makes me wonder if he's up to it.

Fozzies biggest problem at the Chiefs was selections. He was so random and tried way to hard to mix it up. It was really baffling at times.
In an ABs set up he won't be the sole selector and will have probably learned a lot over these years. I reckon Shag and Smithie are pretty good judges so if they reckon he's the man then I wouldn't discount that at all. -

I'd be nervous about Fossie, but I wasn't sure that Hansen would make a good leader either. So, really, what the hell do I know about what goes on behind closed doors, and if Smith rates him, maybe I should too.
It just feels wrong.

*Smith was quick to point to the fact that Foster guided the team to a semifinal and final during his tenure.
"I think that's a non-thinking throw-away line that doesn't make sense to me," Smith said. "That takes away the attitude that everyone can learn and everyone can improve."*

Well Rattue says Foster would a bad choice.
Fozzie's got my vote now! !

Just a thought...
...what happened to Tony Gilbert post 2001?

He went Scotland for a while , after that I don't know. Maybe they would have gone better as a team if their roles were reversed?

If Smith is endorsing Foster as the next head coach then that is enough for me. He would know Foster's ability better than just about anyone else.
My concern is to make sure he has enough quality assistants to support him post 2020. Hopefully at least one of Rennie, Cotter, Joseph, Boyd or Plumtree make themselves available to be assistant coaches under him so that fresh thinking is injected into the panel.

Foster and Boyd wouldn't fill me with confidence.
What's your issue with Boyd? He turned around a franchise that hadn't made the finals in about 6 years and got them to two finals, winning one.

I guess because of his record with Wellington? Wellington seem to be to coaches in the npc what blues are in super rugby.

Didn't he make the final one time, which for Wellington is actually an achievement.
He's had two and a bit years with the Canes now and they're a competitive team who have turned over a few stars while remaining near the top of the tree so not sure why his credentials would be questioned.

then rennie took over and won, immediately.
you would hope he has learned a lot, because he was shithouse back then. -
Hi I'm Chris Boyd, I've been riding Mark Hammett's coat tails for two and a half seasons

@Siam Hammett has as much chance of being an All Black coach as Ian fucking Foster
Foster has been part of an unbelievably successful All Blacks team. Wayne Smith thinks highly of him.
@rotated said in Wayne Smith retiring from All Blacks roles:
Pretty obvious candidate for me that hasn't been mentioned. That former Canterbury coach working in Japan seems like he would be and ideal candidate if he wanted to return to NZ. Clear ties going back with the Hansen, Tew, Shand infrastructure too.
He's burned those bridges. Fuck him.

Wayne Smith thinks highly of him, but Wayne Smith has never been a world reknowned columnist for the New Zealand Herald.
