The Herald has descended into clickbait territory there.

You expect Paul to have some inside knowledge with such a headline but instead it's just rambling surmisings.

So if Ben Smith gets his wish and enforces what is apparently in his contract, he won't be playing the Samoa game. He will play for the Highlanders against the Lions instead.
Does that open the selection door (even if just as a one off) for JB or DMac?

@Crucial Smith has said that it is not his wish to skip the Samoa test in order to play for the Highlanders. Stupid media making assumptions.

@Crucial Smith will play for the ABs. He said that clause in his contract was made well before there was any mention of a test against Samoa.

I'm sure that DMac will be the Maori fullback, who play a day later.

First five Otere Black was a late inclusion for late scratching Beauden Barrett, whose 26th birthday was restricted to waterboy duties. Boyd said after the match that they were cautious with Barrett who had suffered headaches since arriving in South Africa but the team doctor couldn't say whether they were due to a head knock he received against the Cheetahs or adapting to the altitude in Pretoria.

Barrett left the field at halftime during last weekend's win over the Cheetahs in Wellington, passed a concussion test and had shown no symptoms until the team landed in Johannesburg.

Although the team doctor was unsure whether his headaches were due to travel, altitude or humidity, it was decided the day before the match to withdraw him from the Bulls match the day before kick off as a precaution.

Barrett had exercised earlier in the week without any issues, Boyd said.

Injuries out of the match included openside Ardie Savea and lock Mark Abbott both coming from the field with head knocks

"So [Beauden] was really different because every time he exercised, every time he trained he got absolutely no symptoms at all. But the next morning he woke up with a headache, which probably 80 per cent of the squad did because we're trying to get used to the altitude and trying to get used to the temperature and trying to get used to all sorts of things," said Boyd.

Sounds like a bit of rotation to me. No reason to risk the Golden Boy, and we won anyway

@westcoastie Todd and Crotty are potentially both under concussion clouds.

I was just reading about SBW starting Ramadan a few days ago, so that means no food or water between dawn and sunset until the day of the 1st test, June 24. He may have fasted in the past without any publicity.

It's not that uncommon amongst athletes, Hakeem Olajuwon being one of the most well-known, but can impact on your ability to perform and rehydrate during practices.

@Bovidae That's gotta play havoc surely. Anyone remember how his form was in previous years around this time?

Last year, Ramadan was exactly in the period between the last leg of the Sevens Series and the Olympics, so he didn't play any games during Ramadan.

In 2015, during the first weekend of the Ramadan, the Chiefs lost the Super Rugby QF to the Highlanders; he played that game, but I can't remember whether he played well or not, or how many minutes. The only other game he played in that period was the All Blacks game v Samoa. He played the full 80 minutes.

In 2013 and 2014, he played rugby league.

I know you're allowed to drink fluids during Ramadan - I wonder if protein shakes are allowed? Or would that be pushing the boundaries a bit?

@No-Quarter guess it all depends how strictly he adheres to it, bearing in mind he only recently altered his stance on Sponsor logos....
