Look what you've started @Billy-Tell
Hope you give it a go and will be interested in what you think. FYI, up until December 2015 I thought exactly the same as you did. Til an American mate brought some Makers Mark on a holiday.

Yep, Maker's Mark really is the dogs nuts. Generally prefer Scotch or Japanese, but it would be hard to pass up a Maker's regardless of what the other choices are
Edit: I am also currently enjoying some Buffalo Trace, having bought a bottle after hearing Joe Rogan was lyrical about it and then seeing a bottle on sale - not bad and definitely more Maker's Mark than Jim Beam

Jack Daniels is not actually bourbon I think?
-
Had a bottle of Jack Daniels Single Barrel a few years back. Was pretty good and way, way above yer normal JD.

Nah its Tennessee whiskey. Similar enough though, just slightly different filtering processes.
-
I'm an occasional scotch drinker, and I've never bought a bourbon in my life other than Aldi brand one for cocktails. Just got a bottle of Maker's Mark last night on your recommendations, and I have to say it's very nice. Wasn't expecting that at the price.

@victor-meldrew If you enjoyed that, there are two others worth considering...
Gentleman Jack and Jack Silver Select.
Cheers

Got me some woodford reserve for Fathers day, looking forward to trying it tonight.

I've bought a bottle of the Growing Wings Solera and the Growing Wings from the pinot cask on a visit to the distillery two weeks ago. A bunch of us are looking at buying a barrel too...
-
@smudge i have been down that "buy a barrel" route, i couldn't get enough people interested and although the 2-3 of us that were keen could still afford it....in the end i realised id still just end up with 10-15 bottles of the same whiskey, and i still enjoy trying new ones
I do love the idea though if you can get enough people into it
-
speaking of xmas, picked up the Lark xmas release to share with the brother in law

A little Xmas present for myself, to be enjoyed after Xmas dinner.
Really gotten into Islay whiskies over the past year, especially those with a good whack of peat so I wanted to try this one from Caol Ila
Fuck my favourite

My mate and I thought maybe 2-3 of our mates would be interested. We're up to 12 in less than 2 weeks...

Had a whisky tasting evening. One of the lads brought the 15 year caol ila unpeated, it went down a treat with everyone.

got a bottle of this from TR Jnr for Xmas, now I'm not normally a fan of the Islay whiskys, while this has a very smokey aroma, it was surprisingly smooth to drink, MRs TR got me a Glenlivet 12 yr (might crack tonight)

Reviving this topic again as it keeps getting no love.
As per the Beer thread, recently had my best mate from Melbourne stay with us.
Drank heaps of beers but we are both massive peat-heads so this was our whisky (and whiskey) lineup for his stay.
And yes, that is my second bottle of the Coal Ila which is absolutely crazy good. My second favourite whisky only behind the Ardbeg Ardbog.
The two Octomore's 10.3 and 11.3 are also brilliant but without quite the same finesse that the Coal Ila has.
Also, if anyone is looking for a great but reasonably priced Rye Whiskey, I could not recommend the Willett enough. A smashingly good Rye Whiskey which surprised us both.
And Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire & Cask Strength is just nuts, very full on in your face smoke, peat, iodine flavours, an absolute flavour bomb and loved it as well.
