Question about losing Weight
-
Ok this will probably sound stupid,im new to this whole healthy eating and exercising everyday gig. Just curious to know when exactly does the body 'lose weight'?<br />
While your working out, immediately after, or several hours later?<br />
<br />
Also i jump on the exercycle when i get home from work, im fairly hungry but resist eating as ive heard its best to exercise when your hungry as it forces the bosy to use the stored energy (fat),is that right or am i better off having sumthing to eat?. -
The best way I've found to think about it is to treat your body like a machine. It has two fuel sources, food and fat. Once you have used up the fuel from food it starts using fat, you can make it do that by making it more efficient (raising your metabolism by eating often and exercising at least three times a week) and by exercising on empty stomach (either in the morning or three hours after your last meal).<br />
<br />
If you eat less and eat well, the less food fuel gets turned into fat fuel as well. And don't forget the water, two litres a day.<br />
<br />
Only worry about what you weigh once a week, otherwise you'll lose your motivation if you start worrying about weight every day, or worse after exercise as you will fluctuate wildy. Just keep the loss consistant from week to week. -

Cheers,im doing that,drinking a good 3 litres of water per day,eating a decent breakfast,eating fruit and salads...the time i exercise after work it would be a good 4 hours since i last ate. And have not touched a drop of piss in 3 weeks.... <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> -
Virgil - unsure of the exact point when the body loses weight but consider this... depending on how much of your body is or was fat then keeping a track of losing weight can be a bit tough. If you had a lot of fat chances are exercise and a healthy diet will mean that your weight will drop (good point from Kirwan about when to weigh yourself - water levels etc will have your weight yoyo'ing) as you lose fat.<br />
<br />
You will get to a point where the muscle mass you are building will start to counter the fat you have been losing... meaning that the big decrease in weight to start with will slow down and then plateau... at this point you should focus less on weight and more on body shape and fat content... quite likely that you'll even gain a bit of weight, however it will be muscle rather than fat!<br />
<br />
Cardio in the morning is recommended - better for fitness and fat loss (burning fat supplies etc)<br />
Weights during the day/evening once you've eaten (you need fuel for the machine!)<br />
<br />
Beauty of building muscle is that it continues to burn energy even when you are not working out - increased fitness adds to the efficiency of the burning process. -

Some very good points there Paek,at this stage all im doing is spending around 30 mins a day (give or take) on the exercycle. I do feel i need to do sumthing else. I hope it will burn the fat(the only place where it really is is my guy) but i guess it will also shape and build muscle on my legs.<br />
I see the Warehouse sells cheap weight sets,something like that would be useful too. :nta -
eating a little before your workout gives your body some fuel to be pushed, but eating a meal around 30-60 mins after your workout means the meal is digested more efficiently as your metabolic rate is still pumping from the workout. The trick is to get your heart in the training zone and a good sweat up.

I'm surprised our resident sports expert junior hasn't been in here to tell you all how its done.<br />
<br />
If you can handle it, going for a run before breakfast not only wakes you right up but the kick on you get from breakfast will keep you going as your body goes mental on the food energy. For evening exercise I actually tend to eat an hour beforehand if its something like pasta, because after a day at work I'm not really into exercise <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> -

Whos that?<br />
<br />
Im the opposite Nick,id rather exercise after work,always feeling alot more active once i get home. But getting up an hour earlier in the morning to squeeze in a work out isnt too appealing,in the weekend however i do a couple of rides including one first thing before breakfast. -

It's really interesting how people feel about when they prefer to do cardio/weights - A friend I train with is similar to me in that we prefer cardio in the morning but while I'm good to do weights after any meal (even breaky) he preferred to wait till at least 2pm... just didn't feel that he had enegry to push weights any earlier irrespective of what or how much he had to eat.<br />
<br />
I think learning about how you like to exercise - or at least identify the times when you perform the best is important... feeling that you are improving is massive for keeping your motivation up and if you keep exercising at the wrong times and getting poor results etc you're less likely to keep going.<br />

agh if you want time of day, morning is best, as the fat burning advantages of a higher metabolic rate are reduced when one sleeps.Therefore best not at night/evening.

<br />
I was just curious to know when the body started to 'eat' into the fat reserves,still alot im learning i feel if im going to do this i might as well do it properly!<br />
Weighing yourself is tricky,as pointed out before your weight can vary over the course of a day,kind of disheartning when you see you have lost weight one minute only to get it back a few hours later! So i make sure i avoid the scales during the course of the week,only to weigh myself the same day at the same time roughly. -

I'd imagine that will differ between people... some folks seem to be able to put on muscle mass really quickly while burning fat - their weight wouldn't change to much as you swapped one for the other. Whle weighing yourself is a good way to check progress you should only make it part of your 'system', consider increased muscle definition (muscle being built while fat reduces), how you actually feel - with all that cycling I'd think that your legs would feel stronger, and if you are really keen get your missus to take a pic of you (ha ha not that kind :twisted:) and check it 2-3months into your programme.<br />
<br />
Losing fat is generally the focus but if you make it the sole measure of progress you'll get to the point where there is little fat loss occuring and it would suck if that killed your motivation as you would have done well to get to that point in the first place!!<br />
<br />
these are hard lessons that I've learnt myself bro! kind of theraputic to pass on some 'advice'!! <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> -
Yep, as an experiment I weighed myself at different times of the day, before and after exercise. All it told me was to just focus on one day a week, and same time.<br />
<br />
Most of weight loss after exercise is just fluid, the real benefits are coming from burning the fuel you have consumed during the day and speeding up your metabolism for the next day.<br />
<br />
And when you reach a plateau (you will), change the focus to things like clothes getting looser (belt notches, etc) and change up your program again to kick it off again. -
Kirwan, what are spending your half of Virgil's fitness consultation fee on? I'm thinking pies and beer <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Theres really only one place i can lose weight from,the gut and your mind can play tricks...i think it looks smaller...but does it :nta..the Mrs says i look slimmer but im not so sure. It certainly feels easier on the legs now and im sure in time they will look more defined. I have a tight pair of shorts that i wear often,when they start to loosen im sure it means im getting sumwhere!<br />
<br />
Like you said Kirwan weighing yourself can be tricky,you do go up and down throughout the day so im making sure i do the official weigh in the same time every week.<br />
Been drinking around 3 litres of water every day, make sure i eat a decent breakfast and include as much fruit and salads as poss.<br />
Only been just under 3 weeks so i cant expect miracles at this stage..especially after neglecting my body for the past 15 years... -
You also start off losing weight very easily as it's a drastic change and then your body adapts. They key is to recognise this and change it up (can involved eating mroe on the day off).<br />
<br />
Don't trust your eyes get a tape measure and measure your chest and waist, and measure yourself each week on on your "weigh" day. I'm not doing that, but paying attention to my clothes - a suit I could barely fit is now very loose and I'm working in another belt notch.<br />
<br />
It will take time, so patience is a key as well as your motivation will waver. It's how you handle it that will decid ehow much weight you lose.
