He must have thought he wasn't competitive for the All Black job. It's the only reason I can fathom why he'd have agreed to the Wallaby role before NZR complete their process.
Or he couldn't get any decent assistant coaches, so knew his ABs application would be flawed. Your team is as important as you. So instead he will be picking up Ozzie assistants, which is part of the deal, to train them up to take the head role later. Then he can look at another ABs attempt for 2024

@mariner4life but I think he's a calm and measured guy - whereas the last few have been fueled by PASSION and a massive dose of Aussie, aussie, aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi!!
After the shambles and busted relationships there (surely!) will be some pragmatism about how long it'll take to get the house in order and see improvement.
If he can make this post a winner he can do anything imo!
because Robbie Deans wasn't? Look what they did to that guy.

What decent assistants are left out there actually?
Rennie could probably have got Coventry who's pretty decent.
I think he's blown his chance to coach the ABs. You can't come back from coaching Oz I reckon.

I dunno about that bit, but I'm pretty sure that is where he is at rather than all the tinfoil hat shit about coach already decided. There is a big difference between forgone conclusion and doesn't think he'll put a good enough show on. He may also have signed ages ago, as per rumours, when it seemed a much bigger field. I doubt Oz are keen to be seen again taking ABs left-overs ala Deans

TBF Rennie is used to taking over teams in turmoil (the Poo when he stepped in after McAlister quit), under-performing teams (Chiefs, Wellington), and talented young blokes (U20s) - so he's probably a little more ready for it than Deans who came from the high performing and talent filled Crusaders.

TBF, from what I've heard about the egos in the NSW camp alone he's going to have a hard job ahead of him.

Not after taking this gig he can't.

Why? If it does well with the Wallabies, why not? ABs are pragmatic enough to let BBBR be Sir Not Appearing etc, times have changed. If he's the best candidate in 2024, why not?

Because I'm not averse to missionary work growing the game in tier two nations. I do object to rewarding people who take trophies from us.

Fair enough, you're averse to it. Doesn't mean the NZR are that way inclined

Absolutely dead to me; he can fuck off to Japan for his pay day.
-
@mariner4life I rate Rennie ahead of Deans on those attributes - probably has more scope for improvement given how shithouse things have been tracking.
-
TBF on Rennie in the interview it sounds like he had been discussing this potential role for months even before NZR came calling. I even would say that potentially they were so far down the process NZR missed the bus completely and may have only just served to bump up his price in AUS.
Good luck to him, would be great to see a more competitive AUS (for a short time at least)

which begs an interesting question. It's been known for ages that Steve was finishing up after the world cup. Are we seriously meant to believe that the future of the AB coach was being based on the outcome of one game?

agreed, I am getting more concerned with NZR process than supposed misguided loyalties
