He must have thought he wasn't competitive for the All Black job. It's the only reason I can fathom why he'd have agreed to the Wallaby role before NZR complete their process.

Or he couldn't get any decent assistant coaches, so knew his ABs application would be flawed. Your team is as important as you. So instead he will be picking up Ozzie assistants, which is part of the deal, to train them up to take the head role later. Then he can look at another ABs attempt for 2024

Not after taking this gig he can't.

Why? If it does well with the Wallabies, why not? ABs are pragmatic enough to let BBBR be Sir Not Appearing etc, times have changed. If he's the best candidate in 2024, why not?

Because I'm not averse to missionary work growing the game in tier two nations. I do object to rewarding people who take trophies from us.

Rennie is asked and answers a question about the AB coaching position.

Fair enough, you're averse to it. Doesn't mean the NZR are that way inclined

This and Joseph with Japan show that these guys are human.

One prospective employer wants to grill them and leave them waiting while another blows smoke up their arses and waves a cheque. I know which way I'd decide.

@mariner4life I rate Rennie ahead of Deans on those attributes - probably has more scope for improvement given how shithouse things have been tracking.

TBF on Rennie in the interview it sounds like he had been discussing this potential role for months even before NZR came calling. I even would say that potentially they were so far down the process NZR missed the bus completely and may have only just served to bump up his price in AUS.

Good luck to him, would be great to see a more competitive AUS (for a short time at least)

which begs an interesting question. It's been known for ages that Steve was finishing up after the world cup. Are we seriously meant to believe that the future of the AB coach was being based on the outcome of one game?

I think it raises serious questions again about the NZR processes. This time in making sure all eligible coaches were aware it would be a merit based application process regardless of the RWC outcome.

I'm equally surprised by the suggestion Rennie didn't think he'd be an option until late in the piece.

No conspiracy here - just a trust in Hanlon's razor.

Rennie has been burnt in the past in an interview where he knew he wasn't going to get the job.

I like aluminum, some of my favourite beer comes in it 🙂

Not attempting to sound like conspiracy, but I am sure this does, I am starting to wonder if it is like a few business scenarios I have encountered.

We have an internal incumbent who I am confident will take over 90%, he/she has been groomed for the role (and not in the kiddy fiddling type ofway) to take over. To show equality to all other applicants and legal HR process, I go through the process even though I am pretty sure I am going to hire the first person. This ensures we are seen to be compliant and fair, although reality is I have already made up my mind. This is my process

Perhaps it was always Foster, net cast out at last minute as they weren't expecting to lose the semi final which created extra doubt that initially they didn't have to ensure it looks fair to the public and other coaches for due diligence..anyhoo

I wear my hat with pride

Great signing by Aussie. Can't be long until they will get their MIT's on the Bledisloe.
