Speaking of which has a toss been made ?
How is the weather looking ?
Has the starting line up been revealed ?
Did Stead read that article on Santner ?

I'm prepared fora humiliating defeat, possibly being saved by rain.
What has happened to the black caps over the last couple years, really gone downhill from our recent lofty heights.
Because of Boult, Taylor retired and Williamson always injured and out of form?We have fallen off a cliff because our golden generation has retired or are near retirement, and we haven't been able to replace them with younger players of promise. In fact Stead has barely introduced any young players, preferring short term fixes like Santner and Bracewell who are simply not fit for purpose
Don't really agree.
We fell off a cliff 3 years ago just 3 tests after their pinnacle of the WTC.
Because the senior players/ a golden generation, were 'spent' upstairs. A dip was understandable. But its been 3 years of mediocre dirge while a golden generation pissed away 3/4s of their peak years. A coach not strong enough to shake up and ruffle some feathers.
The youngsters abd newbies have been good.
Mariner's point about a fit bowling 3some is very on point though.
It's not been -
While waiting for play to start I saw the team list ( all 16 players ) listed on cricinfo.
Apparently we have three wicketkeeper batsmen in Latham, Blundell and Conway.
Also a stack of all rounders.
Some “batting” all rounders ( Bracewell, Ravindra, Mitchell )
Some “bowling” all rounders ( Santner ???? Are they taking the piss ?????? )
….and some just “all round” all rounders……( Phillips which is fair enough because he can genuinely do both……and Chapman who has taken ONE first class wicket at 246 )
Comforting to know they are essentially all jacks of all trades. Their multi skills will terrify India to no end.

Fuck I've missed the 90s black caps

Geoff Allott and Robert Kennedy tried hard but they weren’t quite Waqar and Wasim.

Geoff Allot was actually a decent ODI bowler and had an awesome World Cup in 99. Also suffered from a lot of injuries.

That’s fair.
Awful test record but he was on fire at the 99 WC.

What the fuck. There must be a NZ elite coaches' Whatsapp group, because Noeline Taurua Barnett, Stead and Razor all seem to love battling utilities over talented specialists

When ( if ) play starts it’s worth noting that we’re up against the top two all rounders in the world at test level.
Then again apparently Joe Root is third so maybe it’s a shallow pool.

from cricinfo
India win the toss and opt to bat first. Gill isn't 100% fit, so Sarfaraz is back into the XI. Kuldeep has been picked as the third spinner ahead of Akash Deep. With Gill out with a stiff neck, Rahul has been listed at No.3 on India's team sheet. No Santner for NZ. Ravindra and Phillips are the spin-bowling allrounders for the visitors. Young slots in at No.3 in the injury-enforced absence of Williamson.
India: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 KL Rahul, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Sarfaraz Khan, 6 Rishabh Pant (wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Mohammed Siraj
NZ: 1 Tom Latham (capt), 2 Devon Conway, 3 Will Young, 4 Rachin Ravindra, 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Tom Blundell (wk), 7 Glenn Phillips, 8 Matt Henry, 9 Tim Southee 10, Ajaz Patel, 11 Will ORourke
