this one? Quite a few different takes in that article.

biggest takeaway from that article is from Cully:

"it again shines an unflattering light on the All Blacks coaching appointment process. MacDonald's hasty exit means his recruitment was a mistake from the outset, and there is a further layer to it.

In the period between Scott Robertson getting the job last year and finalising his coaching team, I contacted Tony Brown to see if he had been approached.

Brown, who has always been a straight-shooter with me, said no but he was available and was looking for a job because his old mate Jamie Joseph had already decided to head back to NZ.

So, the All Blacks might have also missed out on Brown by going with MacDonald โˆ’ to the Springboks' benefit."

    Jesus that makes you sick

I get the sense Leon was selected in the coaching team due to a combination of loyalty and optics - with having the Blues coach in the mix helping to diversify the coaching team.

Not sure the Blues optics meant much at all. The fact that he had been the head coach of the biggest super franchise and had been part of the turnaround wouldโ€™ve been a consideration far more. Also lets not forget Leon was in the frame pre the Springbok test in 2022, so a combination of getting their man, the previous connection with Razor and the head coaching experience.

    Yeah, he's still a bloody Crusader. ๐Ÿ˜‰

it was probably a sweet deal where Rangi gets to coach the Crusaders with Mark Hammett as his assistant coach.

nah, just bring back Dave Hewitt and Aaron Mauger as forwards and backs coaches to make sure Crusaders don't get close to that bloody trophy for at least a decade, that should do it.

Nah nah, time for Toddy to have a redemption tour.

First father and son coach / player combination in NZ Super rugby?

Iโ€™ve heard even Todd reckons Ethan Blackadder is massively overrated

Has there been any word who is replacing Rangi as outside back coach? Or does Razor agree with me that the coaching group was/is a bit big??๐Ÿ˜œ

@Machpants is a tough one really, I mean i have no issues with the head coach wanting to pit together his coaching team and expect Leon was always top of Razors list, meaning he was likely not gonna go to the likes of Brown unless Leon knocked him back.

That said, I expect the whole point of the coach putting his team together is to avoid what happened with Fozzie and now Leon.

No thatโ€™s not true at all. Toddy reckons Ethan is excellent and one of the top loose forwards in NZ, especially when he plays the three games a season.

Yes and no. Maybe they just feel it's too late to add another coach this season. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing. It is what it is

Sorry but that immediately made me think about the "carry his load" scene from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Yes and no. Maybe they just feel it's too late to add another coach this season. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing. It is what it is

Not even halfway through the season, but genuinely don't think they will replace him.

But they haven't said they won't replace him in the long term, Ellison is being lined up for Crusaders job in 2026, best case scenario is Byleendal comes back from Leinster in 2 years, or ask Nick Evans if he's keen.

I bet they don't replace him with same thing. They may actually have use for another skills coach at some stage, but will not have someone who will set tactics . But anyway we will know more eventually.

1 year left in Penney's contract at Crusaders, Ellison set to takeover in 2026.
