Free weights are much more functional so I do get the ‘bro hate’ on people having a go at guys doing machine weights.

What's the goal? Hypertrophy or doing the heaviest free weight movement? If it's hypertrophy then the view is decades out of date

Not really. Benching x weight with free weights is tougher than x weights on a smith machine. I do get the ABs doing the former.

But…..there’s still room for more functional strength, calisthenics etc.

Goalposts moving all over the place. All I said was I don’t get the hate for the Smith when another TSFer said they use it. You said you do get the hate for it. It’s an excellent tool if you know what you are doing

Anyway back to the rugby. Jordan from the bench in the first one.. give him at least 20mins.

Maybe he starts the second test

Same. It’s great as long as you get the initial setup right. Even better for incline IMO

Never understood the hate for it

Free weights are much more functional so I do get the ‘bro hate’ on people having a go at guys doing machine weights.

Flip side of that of course is do we really want to injure ourselves at our age doing big benches with free weights ?

As long as it’s keeping the body moving it’s all good stuff.

Ratima benching that at his weight is damn impressive, up there with Will Genia and Digby Ioane but bench is only part of overall strength…..other lifts play a part too.

Digny’s bench wasn’t much help when Jérôme collared him.

Definitely not which is exactly the point I was making

Yeah Beauds to start. ALB/Jordan bench. I won't be surprised to see Havili instead of ALB though.

Here is the apparent backline for this weekend barring any set backs that I’ve just been sent. I do have doubts because the decisions are a little odd but I can only take his word for it. Hasn’t led me astray so far so thought I’d share with the fern.

    1. TJ
    2. Dmac
    3. Mark Telea
    4. Jordie Barrett
    5. ALB
    6. Sevu Reece
    7. Beauden Barrett

    Bench
    21. Ratima
    22. Rieko Ioane
    23. Will Jordan

Personally. I absolutely love ALB getting the start in 13 if that’s the case. Also sends a rocket up Rieko. Good and healthy competition.

Yeah Havili needs some game time in one of the Argie matches. I disagree with him being in the squad but the cover needs to be involved in these games

I think the conversation moved on from my post but in case it didn't, I understood arching was frowned on but looks like times have changed. Still, bouncing off the chest is still considered risky and dangerous.

Last few pages have left me thinking I’m the only somewhat unfit not ripped poster on the forum. Everyone else lifting weights…

Seems odd that Caleb Clarke isn't starting.
Last chance saloon for Telea perhaps.
ALB deserves the start ahead of Proctor. (for now)

There could be a number of theoretical armchair weightlifting experts on here.

@Frank I don’t recall him saying he had some work done on his finger during the break in a recent all blacks post. Could be a factor

I've gone back to weight training after 20 years off, so it's never too late. It started because I wanted strength to improve my tennis game. So I'm not trying to bulk up, mainly use machines concentrating on good technique and high reps. Over the last few months I'm finding I generally feel better in general, and I want to keep going for my general well being as I get older

It will be interesting to see how they frame the selections if that is the backline. Squad rotation or some other reason?

As I posted at weekend the 23 could be deduced from the NPC releases. Since then Perofeta succumbed to blackadders, so Jordan in.

ALB to start is the talking point.
