Big Reggie Goodes. Started to come into his own for the Canes and was beginning to push for AB selection before concussion cut his career short. Probs would still be playing now but heโ€™s been out of the game for a good 7 years now.

Broadhurst was the other one from the Canes who just made the ABs before retiring from concussion.

1 Craig Dowd (forced to switch sides by Hart, soon departed)

Should Dowd really be there? He played 64 Super matches and half his career was played before it existed. He was also out of the ABs after only being used as a bench player in his final year.

    Bull Allen.

Forced into retirement at 30 because of a back injury. Massive cult crowd favourite. Such an iconic part of the early years of the Hurricanes.

He probably shouldn't be, but I was struggling for loosehead props. Maybe Saimone Taumoepeau?

Mitch Graham is another who had his career ended due to concussion. Promising up-and-coming loosehead.

I'd be interested in a gone too soon to league team. You could assemble one hell of a backline.

    1. Brett Iti
    2. Frano Botica
    3. Va'aiga Tuigamala
    4. John Schuster (fuck me he was a great player)
    5. Craig Innes
    6. Matthew Ridge
    7. John Gallagher

Marc Ellis surely slots in there somewhere

Brendon Edmonds. Was a heck of a player before injury struck. I reckon he could have pushed to All Black contention. Good strong carrier, stable in the scrum, real shame injury wrecked his career.

I reckon he'd be a much better wing that Ridge.

There doesn't appear to be any love for Nicky Allen.

I mean, he died 12 years before Super Rugby started...

How good was Kane Barrett? He had to quit early.

    @Rancid-Schnitzel

Hard to say, he was still improving when he had to quit.

I just looked up his career.. he only managed 4 SR games (3 starts)

Tiaan Falcon, shone for the NZ U20 scoring 109 points that 2017 tournament, spent a season or two at the Chiefs before upping the sticks and chasing the moolah, man he would've been a great backup for McKenzie in recent years considering the revolving door of disappointment there (Gatland, Ioane, Trask).

@ruggabee playing for Toyota since '21. Is he actually any good or just on a par with those others listed?

He can't be that great if HB don't even rate him their best...

I remember there were a few Cantabs on here who really rated Hamish Gard.
