@mariner4life you're probably right, im just concerned that if you're not looking to grow...then your begging to actually fail....i dont think keeping the status quo is possible
@antipodean i think if its based on actual business cases like A-League rather than trying to force growth into new areas that show little interest, thats exactly what we should do

as long as the ABs continue to win more than they lose, and the kiwi teams keep winning Super rugby, then i don't think most will give a shit. And until the mythical explosion of basketball and league actually happens, i can't see that changing. so muddle along we will.

I don't much about the A-League and care even less, but it seems they've had the same problem with expansion that SR had.
They've also got the problem that the best exponents of their game are definitely not in Australia.
It would be reassuring if the reported comments included something like "he presented a compelling SWOT analysis showing us some easy gains and long term strategy for growth in engagement, revenue etc."
But fear not, he played some code a few decades ago.
-
@antipodean not sure what problems theyve had, thought it had been pretty stable
I know when the Western United won their bid it was competitive, South Melbourne FC are a very old club, lots of history with lots of local success...was the other team locally that was in the running...theyre still pushing for an A-League spot, Western United are building a new admittedly small (appropriate) out west which has to be a sign things are ok for the future
-
@Kiwiwomble I was just reading about how a couple of their early additions lost their licences or some such.
-
@antipodean maybe, not too sure about the past, recently seems ok and i think importantly problems theyve had havent blown up the whole league

Interesting to see how rests for international players get handled now
How is a new CEO going to make any difference to that? He is the CEO os board, not the coach of individual teams etc.

Agree. Super rugby has, in my view, huge potential. But not if it continues to be subservient to test rugby. This must be kicked into touch in some way
I just hope they have found someone great. Not just OK as they couldn't find someone who was super-duper.
TBH, you've got league if you want club/franchise to dominate rather than tests.
Also, that face and added to his "marketing" background has me already feeling nervous.
I'm already resigned to this being a fizzer of an appointment. Does anyone know what ground-breaking implementations he was responsible for at Canterbury or the A-League? Have either of them substantially increased revenue or market share? Any fundamental changes to competition structures resulting in tangible benefits?
You sound a real joy and a positive person , looking to be negative about someone don't seem to know anything about.
Gotta love forums don't ya? -
i think looking for a silver bullet is often how people get judged too harshly, this appointment just needs to be an improvement...and the next one will be another improvement...and long term we'll get there

Comparing rugby to NRL is apples and oranges too, but you do you too.
not when they are directly competing for the same eye balls it's not.
If i buy a ticket to watch say the Panthers v the Titans, i can be assured that, barring injury, i am watching Edwards, To'o, Cleary, Yeo, and JFH. So i will go
If i was thinking about buying a ticket to say, the Chiefs v the Crusaders, and the team was named without DMac and Finau, i'm saving my money. To me that is the difference.
Yep Mariner I see your point, you (like a fair few) a star follower perhaps and not a team one? Nothing wrong with it, so not getting at you, but that's what it is. I know in a game like rugby,I don't expect to see top (or any ) players every week, just how the game is.
I went to Canes vs Rebels where Canes made a shit load of changes, but it was still my team so I was there with bells on and loved every minute watching my team play. -

because previously Super was a subsidiary to SANZAAR (or whatever it's called now). If they have genuinely spun this up as a standalone entity, the directives to Super players and coaches should be going through the new entity and the new CEO.
Super was the best comp in the world for a long time - it's been a pale shadow of its former self. The question is whether Super is just a feeder for internationals, or a proper standalone competition.

no, not even remotely the case
but if i am forking out what they are charging for a fucking ticket to a game these days, i want to see elite talent, not reserve graders.
(as an aside, i was talking to Dad about why i just cared so little about the Chiefs now. It's because i left the Chiefs region 22 years ago. Being from BOP I fucking hate Waikato so why support a team based there? There is nothing tying me to them other than nostalgia for $10 tickets to Rugby Park including a jug at the Outback. They are not my home team, a fact that has never been hidden. So why care?)

Only if the super teams (or SANZAAR) are going to be paying their wages mate. He is the CEO and not the master etc, and still answers to board.

Yep mate as I said I understand that, but as I said no way can players play every game in rugby.
But you just confirmed what I said, you not paying for tickets if the stars aren't playing. But I not sure that Super tickets are all that pricey anyway.
I can understand your Waikato dislike etc, as a lot of teams have made alliances with teams that are traditional rivals as they are next door, and no probs with that. Hell that was one of things people said when Ta$man was formed in NPC etc.
I realise you live in Aus, and you don't support Chiefs, do you support Rebels or someone over there? -

You could substitute all that for me and the Canes, but add back in the $10 tickets and jug (and sometimes t shirt) from the Outback or the Hilly for me being ok with the Chiefs.
-
@Nepia So what sport or team do you support Nepia? Tickets to Canes are up to $50 at Caketin, and I interested to know what sports you follow where you still get $10 tickets and sit on hill. I used to pay $10 and sit on hill at Ballymore, but 20 odd years back, and I erant a lot less then people do nowadys.
I will add I not probably someone who goes to sprts events to drink beer anyway, but don't know any that even sell jugs etc. I see no point in drinking piss and needing to bugger off for a leak break, because I go to watch the game.
The fact is for many of us to be a sports fan is to go to games and many fimd it easier to just sit at home and watch on tv. And all power to whichever we are, me I love going to rugby, because at park I can actually see whole game and watch as much as I can with players off ball etc. Doesn't make me better, same as Mariner needing stars to pay for tickets etc, we all do it our own way. -

@mariner4life and I aren't discussing any current prices, we're discussing going to games as uni students in the 90s.

Ok, I thought Mariner was going crook about prices of tickets etc, so apologies this is where confusion came in for me. Didn't mention Skarvies in the 90s.
(but if i am forking out what they are charging for a fucking ticket to a game these days, i want to see elite talent, not reserve graders.)
But out of interest, Mariner doesn't follow Chiefs as he has lived in Aus for a long time etc, and you said you go along but chnge it to Canes, so again apologies ,I not sure what you meant.
Out of interest I lived in Aus for 24 years but funnily enough remained a rusted on Canes fan for whole time, (even though I not from Wellington) they were my team when Super started and being a boring bastard they always will be. -

I was relating to mariners story because I feel the same about the Canes who are supposedly my home team. But, I was at Waikato when Super started so had similar uni/pub/rugby experiences that mariner had.

Funny how Super Rugby used to stretch longer and consist of 18 regular games before playoffs during the early 2010's and we coped just fine. Now players from Aus/NZ go to Europe and (instead of the dearth of rugby they are usually exposed to) have to adapt to be playing week and after week in a proper length season and their improvement as players will be subsequently accelerated, they will be developing at a much faster rate compared to when they were sitting twiddling their thumbs as a fringe player back in NZ playing like a combined total of 10 games of Super & NPC per year. The Australian players even less with no NRC.
